Moving on up

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Despite the inevitable disappointment of the postponement of Sports Day, we still had a cracking but rather hectic week. I think it's going to like that until the end of term, don't you?

So, let's have a delve into the wonderful world of Year Five...

Sports Day

Image result for sunshine and showers

It was a shame that Sports Day was postponed but what a good call that was!
Our rescheduled Sports Day is on Wednesday 5th July, same timings as originally planned.
Hope to see you there, especially I will need some serious cheering on during the Staff Relay!

Calligraphy Club

This is Mr Duffy's Calligraphy Club.
They meet every week during lunchtime.
Their writing is a thing of beauty.
Well done one and all.

Transfer Day

The moment that I have been dreading has arrived. I have to come to terms with the fact that our merry band of Year Fives are moving up to Year Six. Sob!

It only seems like yesterday that you were coming to spend Transfer Day with us.

You will find out who your Year Six teacher is on the morning of Transfer Day. You'll have a lovely time getting to know your new Homebase Tutor in the morning and then it will be business as usual for the rest of the day with a few tweaks along the way. Please try not to worry about what is happening, your Year Five Homebase Tutor will let you know what is happening and when.

Remember that first impressions count so show Year Six what an utterly delightful Year Group you are!

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children. It was such a joy to read all the various reasons as to why your names went up on this rather special board.

Well done everyone - you are stars!

Send My Friend to School

On Friday, I took ten Pupil Voice Representatives to take part in the Send My Friend to School campaign by marching through Dorchester and then meeting our local MP, Sir Oliver Letwin.

Three of the ten were Year Five pupils who took part in a presentation and asking the MP a question.

We had a great time and hopefully showed Oliver Letwin that we are passionate about ALL children in the world receiving an education.

Thank you for representing the school so brilliantly, it was a joy to take you.

The Year Five Roadshow

As Transfer Day is approaching with break-neck speed, we busted out of school to meet some of the children who will be coming into Year Five this September.

I took five Year Five children to the new Damers School on Poundbury. We took the 'scenic' route there (thank you Alfie!) but it was fantastic when we eventually got there!

The new building is incredible but so are the lovely adults and children within it.

Although it was a bit of a whistle-stop trip, we hope that the Year 4 children are looking forward to coming up on Thursday. I know that we can't wait to meet them all properly.

Nearly but not quite

Mrs Ettling is in the process of making a film for DASP to show what super citizens we are.
I had asked a few Year Five children to organise meeting their Buddies so that they can be filmed.
A few Year Eights couldn't come due to other commitments which lead to inevitably disappointed Year Fives.

I hope this helps to alleviate the disappointment?

Well, that's it for this week! Next week I will be reporting back to you about Sports Day and Transfer Day amongst lots of other things!

Thank you Seren for your comment this week - don't let me forget to furnish you with credits!

See you next week!

Mrs Ray

On your marks...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I hope you have all had a good week and enjoyed the blistering heat and beautiful sunshine. As I write, the weather isn't quite what it was but hey, it's the weekend, what did we expect? (Blimey! How British did that sound?)

Anyway, let's crack on with the Blog.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to all the children who found their names on the Worth a Mention Board this week. I was so impressed with all the reasons for your selection, what a fabulous group of children you are. Well done one and all!

Year Five Athletes

Last Friday, Mr Roberts took a group of children from Key Stage Two to Budmouth for an Athletics Meeting.

From Mr Roberts...
On Friday 16th June,26 of our pupils travelled to Budmouth School for the SW Dorset Schools Athletics Finals.
DMS were outstanding, all pupils were superb role models and the success of our pupils remained unrivalled.
8   1st  places was indicative of the ability and endeavour of our pupils-well done.

Congratulations to you all and thank you for representing our school so positively and with incredible results. I believe that a few of you will be going on to represent Dorset in the South-West Finals.

A-ma-zing!

Sports Day

Just to remind you that our school Sports Day is scheduled for Wednesday 28th June
Year Five start their day with Playground Games first thing in the morning, followed by Tug of War. We then break early for lunch (11.40am) and then crack on with the track and field events in the afternoon, starting at 12.30pm.

Celebration Assembly

Just a reminder that our last Celebration Assembly of the year will be held on Thursday 20th July at 9.30am in the Drama Hall. It will last for at least an hour as there will be A LOT of celebrating - I warn you now!

Buddy Picnic

We will be holding our annual Buddy Picnic on Wednesday 19th July. It is a lovely opportunity for a last, proper get together before the Year Eights move up to Thomas Hardye. If your child normally has a school lunch then it might be worth not booking one that day. However, if you do then Local Food Links are brilliant and make sure that the children are catered for.

Teacher of the Year!

We have a celebrity in our midst!

Huge congratulations to our very own Ms Seymour who won Wessex FM's 'Teacher of the Year' as part of their Local Hero Awards.

We all know and love Ms Seymour so this award is well and truly deserved. She has been working hard behind the scenes getting ready for our new Year Five children which means she will be back with us in September - hoorah!

Well done Ms Seymour - you will always be a hero in our eyes!

Blossoming beautifully!

5AD are doing a rather fine job with their Green Plants topic - look at the beautiful flowers they made this week!

Very clever indeed - I can't wait for 5ER to make these flowers. It looks as though you had a lot of fun?

Well, that's it for next week.
I hope you all have a good week and I may well see you at Sports Day on Wednesday.

I would absolutely love to publish your comments on the blog but they are proving to be a bit thin on the ground! Come on Year Five - you know you want to!

Rays of sunshine

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Before I start, I would like to wish all the Year Five Dads a very Happy Father's Day! I am not being Year Five-ist am I?

Anyway, this is the week that saw Year Five sitting our first ever GL Assessments which links with what the children did at the end of Year Four in their First Schools. The children have been fabulous and taken it all in their stride, well done Year Five.

Let's see what else we have been up to:

Rowan Cottage

On Wednesday, Mrs White and I took our ten Pupil Voice Representatives to Age Concern's Rowan Cottage, a day centre for the elderly residents of the town. Every year, we raise money for them as they are one of the specific charities supported by Year Five.

We were given a tour of Rowan Cottage and were told about all the services that they provide. We then met a few of the members of the Social Club which was the highlight of the day.

We have been asked to raise funds for art materials so, as a result of this, we will be holding a Non Uniform Day on Friday 7th July. We will also be holding a cake sale - more details to follow.

It was a really good morning and our Pupil Voice Representatives were fabulous - thank you, you were a real credit to our school.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children (WAMs) who are up on the board for such a terrific range of reasons. Well done 5PC for representing us so positively at Safewise, that's so good to read.
Well done one and all.

Mirror, mirror on the wall.

So, there I was trying to explain how mirrors work when I had a sudden brain wave!
Danny is the ray of light and he is (not literally) hitting the mirror.

The mirror is my husband's London Marathon space blanket from many years ago. I always knew it worth hanging onto these things as you never know when you will need them!

Blossoming nicely

Meanwhile, back in 5AD, they are whizzing on with their Green Plants topic.

Isn't Mrs Daniel's drawing coming along nicely? I can actually tell what it is...!

Staying Safe

There is no doubt that what happened to Grenfell Tower in London was horrific and made our recent to Safewise even more important. We are thankful for and admire the work of the Emergency Services, in particular the Fire Service.

William brought in the Fireman's helmet that he possesses to show us what our fire brigade have to wear. It was jolly heavy but really well designed.

Who knows, one day William might become a fully qualified Fire Fighter. Watch this space...

Well, that's it for this week. I hope that you have a fabulous week and that the sun continues to shine, well, it is summer after all!

See you next week and don't forget to keep those comments coming. Amelie received 2 credits for her recent comment so it will definitely be worth your while!

Still all in one piece!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

In typical Year Five fashion, we were 'back to business' from the moment the children stepped through the door on Monday morning! The definite highlight of our week has been the trip to Safewise in Weymouth. As you know, each class went on a different day and every single human that went had a fabulous time as you will see below...

Staying Safe

What a fabulous trip! I was so impressed with the whole package from beginning to end. We were made to feel extremely welcome and the wealth of knowledge that we came away with was second to none.

Here are the pictures from 5ER's visit on the Monday.

Now, the staff and helpers might not know this, but Safewise have been busy posting the pictures of us on social media all week and boy, have they captured some cracking moments. So, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, here are the responsible adults in your life on mobility scooters...

Best. Pictures. Ever.

Now, as you are aware, Safewise have been running a quiz all week where the class with the highest percentage were the overall Champions of  the week.

Huge congratulations to 5AD who narrowly beat 5KD. In our defense, 5ER were the first ones to take part in the quiz!

Safewise were really impressed with our children - they really did do us proud. This is what they posted on social media following our visits...

Well done to all of the Year 5 children from Dorchester Middle School. You were a credit to yourselves, your school and your families. Congratulations on all of your quiz scores, you all got a really good score in both quizzes and should be very proud of the work you did

Well done and thank you to everyone who came and supported the trip but most importantly, thank you to the children for representing our school so positively - thank you.

Dollytastic!

Here is our lovely Dolly! She only went and took part in the DASP PE Inclusion Festival recently and ended up being pride of place in the Dorset Echo!

You looked as though you had a fabulous time Dolly! Maybe you could tell us more in the comments section?
Well done young lady!

Worth a Mention Children

A huge 'well done' and congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children. Another impressive set of reasons for your names to be emblazoned on our board.

Well, that's it for this week. I hope you all have a good week and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week. The comments from you seem to have dried up a bit. Please remember that you will be given at least one citizenship credit for making a comment - so what are you waiting for?

Mrs Ray

(who has been planning an evacuation route and routine for our house - I love Safewise!)

By the way - I hope you all had a good half term? I went to see The Next Step in Bournemouth and look who I bumped into...

I have only just recovered from the screaming and loud music! I am now officially middle-aged!
