Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog.
Blimey! What a week! I need this weekend for a lie down after the hectic week we have had!
Lots and lots and lots to report to you so, without further delay, let's go!
Mrs Ray and Miss Enever's Maths Group
In my Maths Group I never cease to be impressed and humbled by the children's incredible learning. Miss Enever and I are very proud of our children and love working with them.
In our group we like to give the children 'characters' and last week we recruited the following:
Our first characters will help us with our work on fractions.
This is PC Numerator, PC Dividing Line and PC Denominator. They come to rescue when crimes linked with fractions are committed.
This HRH The Rounding King. He is a whizz at rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000.
He had to be sworn in by the Master of Maths (me) and we all have to bow and curtsy to him on a regular basis.
We all have a sneaky feeling that Kai is rather enjoying being a Royal!
Hot Chocolate Cafe
What an incredible turn out! Room 5 was, quite literally, swarming with Year Five children clutching their 50ps so they could purchase their chocolatey treats.
A huge THANK YOU to Mr Duffy, Miss Enever and members of 5KD for organising such a fantastic event. They raised £72 which is incredible.
Next week's Fundraising Events
Next week 5CW and 5PC will be running a yummy cake stall during Tuesday break time. Prices will range from 20p to 50p.
Friday 6th February will be an exclusive Non Uniform Day for Year Five. We will be charging a £1 per child.
Save the Children Final Total
I am proud to announce that Year Five raised, in total, an amazing £402 for Save the Children's Ebola Campaign.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Electricity - 5KD style
I was walking past 5KD the other day (as you do) when I heard lots of giggles escaping from the room.
On the one end of a cardboard tube, Martina was shoving glue sticks down the tube and Nathan was at the other end watching them fall to the floor.
Like any other curious person on the planet, I had to ask what on earth they were up to.
Apparently, the glue sticks were electrons travelling along a wire (the cardboard tube). When the wire finished, so did the flow of electrons. Simple!
Celebration Assembly reminder
The next Celebration Celebration Assembly will be held on Monday 9th February.

Be a Waste Wizard
The Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) came into school a few days ago and asked the children to transform things that can be recycled at home using the ‘recycle for Dorset’ collection service into wonderful wizards.
The DWP’s Waste Wizards competition helps children learn about the ‘magic’ of recycling by firing their imaginations and involving their parents and carers.
If you would like more information, please speak to Mrs Whiting who is our Eco Schools Champion.

We had so much fun creating instructions in the style of Neil Gaiman's extraordinary book didn't we?
Over the next couple of weeks, I will be posting the excellent shared writing that the classes have produced in their English lessons.

How to get to The Crusty Cob
Exit the room of learning and walk through the magic archway.
Say 'please' before turning east to the land of the unknown.
Walk down the soft blue river leading to the crystal clear entrance to the world beyond.
Find the black, metal fortress, do not touch the rust, you will live to regret it.
Once through the boundary, carefully cross the fierce, endless pathway.
Continue your journey until you reach the lair of the headless scissormen. Do not touch the one with the glowing sticks, it may burn your fingers.
Tiptoe past the chambers that sit alongside the mysterious alleyway. Do not look in as they hold something, something you have never seen before.
Silently sneak past the evil elk who guards the castle to total and utter happiness for it contains a banquet of baked goods.
Beware of the creatures that inhabit this wonderland, they have eyes on their bellies.
Smell your destiny, eat your destiny and then go home.
Rest.

Worth a Mention Board
You have probably spied a MASSIVE whiteboard outside Mr Duffy's room?
You may have also noticed that Miss Enever has been very busy and making it look rather lovely? Thank you so much Miss Enever for making it look so fabulous, even if you weren't happy with the border!
The purpose of this board is to celebrate those children who are 'Worth a Mention' for something specific they have achieved or for just simply being lovely, working hard and cracking on with it.
Keep your eye on the board as YOUR name could be up there...
