Goldfish!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, I think the children are, on the whole, feeling very at home and have found their feet. How do I know this? Now there's a question!

However, this is the animal that the year group tend to relate to at the moment!

I will try and explain in this post...!

After School Clubs

A huge thank you to parents/carers for taking time to write in the Home/School diaries to give your children permission to attend the plethora of After School Clubs that we have to offer at DMS.

If a child is attending an After School Club for the first time then written permission will still need to be given.

Thank you.

Golden Time

This week 11 children missed their Golden Time.
What a shame!

Please remember that the children's Reading Records need to be signed at least once a week by an adult along with the Home/School Diaries from the previous week.

The Cobweb Cafe homework is due in very soon (23rd September). Maths and English homework will also be set this week.
It's a lot to remember isn't it?

If you are struggling with this then please let your teacher know as soon as possible so that they can help you.

Worth a Mention children

Every week, we will be celebrating those children who are, as it says above, worth a mention. These children's names, along with the reason why, are written on a special board that we have in the Year Five Corridor.

The Worth a mention children this week are:

A huge well done to Eloise, Leon, Cameron, Farhan, Kit, Erin, Chloe, Ben, Josh and Anna on being the first Worth a Mention children of the year.
Fantastic!

Lining Up

This week, Year Five have had to line up at break time three, yes, three times. They STILL don't have the hang of it so guess what they will be doing on Monday? Lining up? How did you guess?!

Does my earlier reference to a Goldfish make sense now?

Grrrrrr!!!!!

Buddens

5CW and 5ER will be the advance party to Buddens this Friday. We are hoping that the weather will be kind to us!

A note will be coming home in the diaries that will reinforce what the children will need to bring with them.

If you have bravely volunteered to accompany us then please wait in Reception and we collect you before we go. We are aiming to leave as promptly after registration as possible.

Celebration Assembly

Once every half term we hold a Celebration Assembly for our Year Five children.
Our first one will be on Monday 19th October at 1.10pm in our Drama Hall. The assembly lasts for approximately 25 minutes.
We will issue you more details nearer the time.

So, that's it for another week. I hope you all have a good week and I look forward to 'seeing' you next week where I will be reporting back from our first Buddens trip including lots of pictures.
Please don't forget to tell your friends and family about this blog - the more views the better.

Getting to grips with everything.

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, we now have a whole full week under our belts and we continue to be impressed with how well your fabulous children are settling in. They are also an extremely polite bunch, I have never had so many 'Thank Yous' for opening a door. Ever!

The step to Middle School is an enormous one isn't it? Some children take it all in their stride and other children find it all a bit overwhelming and intimidating. Please be assured that we are always here for the children and if you have any worries or concerns then please do get in touch.

Anyway, on to this week's Blog...

Golden Time

I am delighted to report that only 7 children missed their Golden Time this week which is pretty impressive considering it was our first 'proper' week. The main issue was getting the Home/School Diary signed in the right place and adults signing the Reading Record. Please see last week's Blog for more information about what the children need to do to earn their Golden Time.

This week, the children have homework (Cobweb Cafe) which is due to be handed in by the 23rd September. We hope you enjoy the task and can't wait to see what the children come up with!

CHAT

Every Monday and Thursday lunchtime, the lovely Ms Seymour runs a drop in session called CHAT in the Year Five Quiet Room. All children are welcome to attend, they just need to remember to eat their lunch first.

CHAT gives the children an opportunity to share any worries or concerns that they may have about school with Ms Seymour in a supportive, caring and friendly environment. They can also share things that are going well or if they need a bit of clarification when they are unsure of anything linked with school.

After School Clubs

Many apologies if there has been a certain degree of confusion surrounding after school clubs. Thank you for your feedback and patience.

A list of clubs should have been emailed to you, if not, please let your child's Homebase Tutor know as soon as possible and a paper copy can be distributed pretty swiftly!

Just to clarify the protocol for children attending After School Clubs at DMS:
  • Parents must give written permission for the attendance of clubs either in the Home/School Diary or on a reply slip if that is the member of staff's chosen way to gain permission.
  • Only when the member of staff running the club has received parental permission the child may start to attend the club.
  • Staff will take a register at the beginning of the club and this register will be taken to the office so we have a record of who is attending specific clubs.
I hope that this makes sense. If not, please do contact the office for clarification.

Buddens

Hopefully you would have received the letter outlining three main events in the Year Five calendar.

Our first trip of the year is to Buddens Scout Centre near Wareham as part of our Ecology topic in Science but we will link a lot of our curriculum to it.

5ER and 5CW are going on Friday 25th September.
5AD, 5PC and 5KD are going on Monday 28th September.

If you have kindly (or should that be 'bravely'?!) volunteered to accompany your child's class on the trip then your child's Homebase Teacher will be in touch with you shortly.

... and finally!

Many, many congratulations to Mr and Mrs Duffy on the arrival of Ruby Isabella born on the 10th September weighing a very respectable 8lbs 4oz. What fantastic news!
We can't wait to meet her...

So, that's it for another week. I hope you all have a great week and I will look forward to 'seeing' you back here next week. If you are feeling brave, please do write a comments in the comments section below. It's always good to hear from you!

Welcome to Year Five!

Hello and welcome to the Year Five Blog!

A huge welcome to our Year Five Blog. The purpose of our blog is to let you know what has been going on in the wonderful word of Year Five and to let you know what is coming up.

The Year Five Team

This is us! From left to right:
Mr Duffy, Mrs Cook, Miss Enever, Mrs Ray (me!), Ms Seymour, Mrs White, Mrs Whitbread, Mrs Daniel and Mrs Lister.
I would just like to point out that this photograph was taken on a slope!

We have had a terrific couple of days with our new recruits, they have been a joy to get to know and we are very excited about the year ahead.

Next week...

We will be on timetable as from Monday 7th September. Your child should have come home with their class timetable in their Home/School Diaries. If your child does not have a timetable them please let their class teacher know as soon as possible so a replacement can be distributed immediately.

Golden Time

This week, every child received Golden Time, hoorah!
Next week, the children are going to have to earn it.

Next week the children will need to:

  • Have their Home/School diary signed for the week commencing 31st August.
  • Make sure that their brand new Reading Record has been signed  by an adult at least once a week.

  • Make sure that homework is handed in on time.
  • Keep up the excellent behaviour and make sure that NO detentions are received!
Easy, right?!

Welcome Letter

Hopefully, you have received a letter welcoming you and your children to Year Five. This letter also contains a lot of important information so if you did not receive a copy then, again, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible so that we can provide you with a replacement.

Drop In Sessions

Just to remind you that the Year Five Team are available every Monday between 3.30pm - 3.45pm. If you just want to pop in to have a quick chat with the teacher or have a look at your child's work then please feel free to do so. If you need to see your child's teacher on a one to one basis then please do contact them to make an appointment.

So, that's it for the first Year Five Blog of the academic year. Thank you for such a positive start to Year Five everyone, let the adventure begin!
