Happy, happy, happy!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

We started the week with a literal bang and ended it with a metaphorical bang!
Read on to find out where/why/how...

Science Day

A fabulous day was had by all! A huge thank you to all the Year Five teachers who made it happen but with a special mention to Mrs White who organised the whole day.

Observe and Draw with Mrs Ray

The children were given a variety of natural objects to look at in greater detail - the Sea Horses were very popular indeed!

Creep Crawlies with Mr Duffy

Who would have thought that your bog standard garden snail could cause so much excitement? Well, they certainly did on Science Day!

Kitchen Chemistry with Mrs White

Year Five were allowed exclusive access to Science Lab 1 and had a terrific time creating bangs, crashes and fires!

Structures with Mrs Cook

Who would have thought that art straws could be transformed into such tall structures? This was definitely an activity that made you think!

Marble Run with Mrs Daniel

Now, I have a confession to make on this one. Mrs Daniel gave me the names of the winners of this challenge and guess what? Yes, I managed to leave them at school! At least I know where they are. I will announce the winners next week - sorry about that!

The Chemistry Show

This was great fun wasn't it? What was your favourite bit?
Thank you to The Explorer Dome who came and performed their usual scientific magic!

Basketball Players

This the write up that Mr Dailey produced following this incredible Basketball match.

The DMS team strolled out onto the court up at Puddletown to face not only Puddletown but Ossies too. The games began and the yr 5's stepped up nervously and passionately to try to win the title of area champs.

Straight away DMS faced an impressive Puddletown side and lost. The DMS team felt dejected but kept on fighting. On to the Ossies game where clearly you can see that DMS was not going to loose again!

Onto the second round of matches and DMS faced Ossies again and out classed the school with impressive points by Phoebe and Bailey. However the next match was against Puddletown...... The game started and instantly the snarl in the DMS players faces began to show in their play.

Amelia was very impressive with her dominant rebounding and superb distribution. Toby was in full control when he dribbled the ball up court planning his teams tactics as he went. James was like the road runner who kept finding space and demanded the ball. Lukas was the most excitable player I have seen in a match who just wanted the ball every chance he got. Phoebe played well and was battling through DMS and Puddletown to try and achieve victory every chance she got! Bailey played especially well like he has been playing for a long time! In the end DMS secured victory over Puddletown and scored more baskets than anyone!

Victory was ours!

Congratulations to the pupils who played - they deserve to be recognised from what they showed me as well as being crowned AREA Champions!

Yr 5 Team
Bailey  (6), Amelia (2), Toby (2), Lukas, Phoebe (4) and James

Well done Team DMS - what an impressive achievement!

Adaptation - Duffy style!

In our Science lessons we have been creating our very own animals that have adapted to live in specific habitats. Mr Duffy created the 'Duffaroo' - seeing is believing!

What animal did you create? What did you call yours? How has it adapted to live in it's habitat? Answers in the 'Comments' section please!

Children in Need - Part One

Well, what can I say? To say that I was impressed with some of the costumes that came into school on Friday is the understatement of the decade! Here is a small selection of the photographs that were taken on the day, there will be more next week.

The school raised an incredible £758 which is fantastic! Thank you so much for all of your contributions and a massive well done to the Year Eight girls who organised us all!

Golden Time

I am sad to report that 18 children (yes, 18!) lost their Golden Time this week which is such a shame!
A lot of homework was not handed in on time so I hope that those children will endeavour to make sure that this is not the case this week.
Come on Year Five, Golden Time is great isn't it?
Make sure you receive it!

So, that's it for another week! Thank you Eachan for your comment on the last blog - who else is going to be brave and leave one?

Have a good week everyone!

Mrs Ray

(who has decided to invest in a decent pair of wellies due to the amount of rain that has suddenly decided to appear!)

Back to earth with a bump!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

It was lovely to see all the children back in school on Tuesday looking refreshed and all ready to carry on where they left off!

Helping Hands

A big 'Thank You' to those of you who have earned money at home to contribute to the Save the Children's Ebola appeal. Along with the Non Uniform Day money, we are hoping to be able to donate a sizable sum but that can only happen if the money is brought in!
Even though the deadline was Friday, it's not too late to bring your money in.
Thank you.

Adaptation

There I was, minding my own business when all of a sudden I spied this sight from Mrs White's classroom. I had to do a double-take!

I have been assured that 'Malcolm the Mackerel' is not a new member of the class but is visiting due to educational purposes.

If you are a member of 5CW, why don't you be brave and tell us what Malcolm was doing in your classroom in the 'Comments' section at the end of this post? There's a credit or two in for you if you do...

Micro-organisms

Whilst I'm still on the subject of Science, 5PC have been looking at rotting and decaying logs in relation to the concept of Micro-organisms.

With the warmth of the classroom. all sorts of creepy crawlies decided to be brave and have a look at their new surroundings - lovely!

The Balaclava Story

We work hard on story writing in Year Five and our recent unit of work was no exception. We based our stories on one that we read by George Layton in his book of short stories called 'The Fib'.

The story we read was called 'The Balaclava Story' which was very entertaining but also very poignant. A lot of the children didn't actually know what a balaclava was so Mrs Lister and I put them in the picture by sporting a couple and modelling them!

Mrs Lister assures me that they are very warm, especially when you are walking up a large, imposing Welsh mountain!

Science Day

Just a quick reminder that it is Science Day on Monday so the children will be off timetable for the day. We are intending to take lots of photos for you so you can see what we got up to!

So, that's it for another week.
I hope you all have a great week and please, please, please be brave and write a comment - it's been a while since I've had any!!

Mrs Ray
(who is practising her drawing skills for Monday - why are you laughing?!?!)

Technical Hitch...

Hello and welcome to, well, no Year Five Blog!

Due to very frustrating technical issues, I have not been able to upload this week's blog. Sob!

However, I will post it on Monday morning as I would have, hopefully, resolved the issues by then
.
So sorry about that.

Spooky!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog.

I hope that you have all had a great half term and that you have recharged your batteries so that you are ready and raring to go for your return on Tuesday 4th November.

I can't believe that our 'new' Year Five recruits have already completed a half term - I suppose it goes to show that time really does fly when you are enjoying yourself?!

Let's have a look at what we got up to last week...

Nice to meet you, to meet you nice!

It was lovely to see so many parents attend our recent Parent Consultation Evenings. We hope that you found it informative and that you have a good picture as to how your child has settled in to their new school.
Our next round of Parent Consultations will be early next year and will be based on academic progress. I will give you more details nearer the time.

The Great DMS Bake Off

I was incredibly impressed with the amazingly high standard of cake decorating in Year Five! Here are the Year Five entries and I think you will agree with me when I say that I did not envy the judge's task!

Congratulations to Freya for winning First Prize in the Year Five category.

I must also mention Katie and Oliver who won second and third prize. What amazing cakes!

Celebration Assembly

A huge thank you to all 101 of you who attended our first Celebration Assembly of the year - it really was a case of 'standing room only' wasn't it?

It was so lovely to see so many children receive certificates after their relatively short time at the school. Please don't worry if your child was not presented with a certificate this time, our next Celebration Assembly will be on Monday 15th December, same time, same place.

Here are a few pictures of the assembly for you to either reminisce over or to see what it was like...

First Schools Visit

As you know, a few weeks ago the whole of Year Five invaded two of our feeder First Schools to read our 'Excuses' stories to the younger children.

Here are a selection of the photographs that were taken at Prince of Wales...

We hope to repeat the experience some time soon but with the First School children coming to us to share their favourite stories. Can't wait!

Science Day

Science Day 2013 039

Next Monday (10th November), Year Five will be off timetable in order to participate in the Year Group’s Science Day. Each Year Five teacher will be providing the children with an activity based on an investigative area within the realms of Science.
We will also look forward to welcoming back the Explorer Dome group who will be delighting the children with their intriguing ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ show.
Mrs White has been working very hard to make sure that you have a great day. We hope that you are looking forward to it too!

Helping Hands

So, how are you getting on with this?
Have you managed to raise lots of money by helping around at home?
Once we have received the money from this and the recent Non Uniform Day then we will announce how much we have raised for Save the Children's Ebola Campaign.

Well, that's it for another week!
We look forward to welcoming you back into school on Tuesday so enjoy the extra day off!
