So near yet so far...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Now, is it true? I heard that in less than two weeks we break up for the Summer Holidays? Excuse me but where has the time gone? Before we know it, you'll be all grown up and heading to Thomas Hardye's! We're going to make the most of the time we have left with you all in Year Five starting by the first item of this week's Blog...

Cinema Trip

As you should hopefully know (!) Year Five are off to the cinema next Friday!
Apologies if it seems a bit 'last minute' but we have been waiting for confirmation from The Plaza and now we have it, it's full steam ahead!
If you have  Dorchester Middle School DBS clearance, we would be extremely grateful if you could come with us. It is vital that we have the required 1:10 ratio when walking the children to the cinema.
We would also be extremely grateful for a prompt return of the slips and money.
We will be leaving school shortly after registration and will be back before lunch time. We will confirm exact timings in a text at the beginning of next week.
How exciting!

Worth a Mention Children

Massive congratulations to all of this week's Worth a Mention Children!

All of 5PC? That's amazing! You must be working incredibly hard!
As for the rest of you, what fabulous reasons to be up on the Board.

Well done one and all!

Mrs Daniel RA?

So, according to Mrs Daniel, at the end of every Dorchester University session - her and Miss Still have a 'draw-off'. Below is Mrs Daniel's masterpiece of the school garden. It's rather good isn't it?

Well done Mrs Daniel - you are definitely working towards ARE!

The meeting of great minds

Once Transfer Day has been and gone, we get together with the First School Teachers to talk about you! Don't panic! It's a really important part of the transition process as we get to know more about you so that we are ready and raring to go in September.

It's always lovely to see our Year Four colleagues - what a lovely bunch!

It looks as though it's not coming home after all...

I'm not a huge football fan. No, sorry, that's not entirely true. Let's start again...
Although I am not a football fan (I fell asleep during the England vs Columbia game!) I still entered into the spirit of wearing red and white to school on Wednesday. It was nice to see others also entering into the spirit of it too!

Better luck next time?

Buddy Picnic

As mentioned in last week's Blog, the Year Five and Eight children will be getting together for our annual Buddy Picnic.
The children will be meeting next Thursday to plan who is bringing what.
We will be asking the children to try and include a few healthy foods in their picnics. I am even going to award a prize to the healthiest picnic as an incentive!
We are going to be asking the children NOT to bring in fizzy drinks or sweets (you try teaching thirty hyped-up, sugar-fueled 10 year olds!) but cake will be permitted along with the sharing of it with members of staff!

The Year Five DASP Citizens of the Year

On Monday, I had the pleasure and honour of attending this year's DASP Citizenship Awards at Thomas Hardye's. This year, our Year Five winners were James and Mary who had been unanimously agreed on by the Year Five Team.

These fabulous children are what the Citizenship Award is all about - congratulations to you both and thank you for making us so incredibly proud of you.

Dates for the Diary

Why is that schools never 'wind down' before the end of the school year? Year Five in particular seem to hurtle towards the end of the term and we wouldn't have it any other way!

So, here are a few dates for your diary:

Friday 20th July
Year Five Cinema Trip at The Plaza
Monday 23rd July
Year Five Celebration Assembly - 9.15am - 10.15am.
Tuesday 24th July
Buddy Picnic
Wednesday 25th July
End of term whole school assembly at Thomas Hardye.

Well, that's it for another week. I hope you all have a terrific week and that the sun continues to shine for you all.
See you next week...

Moving on up!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

What an emotional week! As one door opens another one closes and this really was the case this week when we delivered the current Year Five children upstairs to their new Year Six Homebase Tutors and then rushed downstairs to receive our new recruits. I hope everyone had a super day. It was lovely to see you all back in the fold on Friday where we experienced another beautiful but rather melty day!

Worth a Mention Children x 2

So, here is the Worth a Mention Board from last week...

...and now for this week's Board...

Well done everyone - it's great to see the various reasons why your Homebase Tutors chose you this week.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

Transfer Day - The Daytime

Although it was sad to see you all go upstairs and spread your wings for the day, we had to crack on with it and welcomed a rather lovely bunch of Year Four children into the DMS fold.

We had a great day with our 'newbies' - they will be a very welcome addition to the Dorchester Middle School family.

September here we come!

Transfer Day - The Evening

Later that day, we welcomed the Mums, Dads and Grandparents of the Year Four children into school so that they could meet their child's new teacher for themselves.

We had a very packed Hall which was fabulous (and hot!) and the evening went very well indeed.

A definite highlight of the evening was the modelling section where Darcey, Brooke, Zak and James did a brilliant job of modelling the school uniform.

I'm sorry the picture are a bit blurry, consider them to be 'action shots'.

So you can see what naturals they were on the evening, cast your eye on these super pictures...

So proud!

Summer Concerts

This week also saw the Music Department stage two Summer Concerts which were, according to my sources, rather brilliant.

Year Five had excellent representation as you will see from the picture below.

Well done Year Five - what an impressive thing to do. Maybe we could have an action replay at our Celebration Assembly?

Celebration Assembly

Just a reminder that our end of year Celebration Assembly will be held on Monday 23rd July at 9.15am. We are hoping that it will last around an hour.
Hope to see you there.

Buddy Picnic

On Tuesday 24th July, the Year Five and Year Eight children will be taking part in our annual Buddy Picnic.
The children will be getting together soon to plan the event so I will post a few more details nearer the time.

Sporting Stars

Year Five have been busy bees again and this week Cricket took centre stage.

The following is from Mr Roberts:

Dorset Schools County Cricket Finals
Wimborne Cricket Club
Tuesday 3rd July 2018

The pitch at Wimborne CC may have been benign and the opposition,at times, bereft but DMS still needed great knocks to seal a victory against St Gregorys in the first game.

Jadan and James bludgeoned any free hits with customary aplomb.
Bowling from St Gregory's .went gun-barrel straight but DMS closing batsmen began hammering them like a pair of eager blacksmiths at the forge in a blistering stand.
Jadan had given the impression that he was enjoying batting with James;they scurried between the wickets mischievously, stealing singles, provoking overthrows and then smiling at one another between overs!

Jadan's skill is far from a secret but his knock was its fullest expression, packed with exuberant hoicks, upmarket footwork and outlandish standing reverse sweeps that only he dares to attempt with such regularity-and this from a Year 5.

Well done everyone-a great DMS team performance in the first game of 5.

DMS WON
DMS 242-3
St Gregory's 239-10
DMS 222-6
St James 243-4
DMS 219-5
Allenborne Middle 273-1
DMS 225-3
Christchurch Junior 251-3
DMS 239-2
Moordown 254-2

Well done to all of the team ,especially to James K for captaincy.

It looks as though James is not only a talented model, he is also a talented Cricketer!

Well, that's it for another week!
I hope you all have a fabulous week and I shall look forward to seeing you back here next week.

...and they're off!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Blimey! How busy was that week? I don't think I have ever felt as physically tired as I did at the end of Wednesday's Sports Day! I can't believe how lucky we were with the weather and it looks set to continue over many days. Please remember to apply sun cream, drink plenty of water and wear a hat to protect your head - I can't begin to tell you how important that is.
Right.
Lecture over.
On with the Blog...

Out of this Planet Part Two

A huge thank you to Ted and Mrs White for taking a few more pictures of these amazing homeworks - they really are out of this world! Mrs White was extremely impressed with the originality and quality of these homeworks. They were quite the envy of the Year Five corridor!

Well done 5CW!

Sports Day

What an amazing day! As usual, the Sports Department excelled themselves and put on fantastic Sports Day. I was so impressed with all of the children in the school but the Year Five children were, without doubt, exceptional.
I was lucky enough to be able to get out and about with my camera to get a few pictures of the day to share with you...

Playground Games

Jumping

Boccia

Table Tennis

Tug of War

Track

A few of the winners

Well done to all those who won a medal - I have never won a medal for a sporting event in my life so I can imagine that it's a fantastic feeling. I am very proud of you all!

However, at the end of the day there was one class who won in Year Five and that was the amazing 5AD!

What a brilliant achievement - well done!
To everyone who participated in Sports Day I just want to say that you were all incredible! To watch you go out there and try your hardest, regardless of how 'sporty' you regard yourselves was a joy to behold and you made me extremely proud to be your Progress leader.

A special mention must go to Miss Randall and Mrs Daniel. Not only did both of their classes win in their year groups, 6NR were 5AD last year! Genius!

What a great day!

Worth a Mention Children

Oh dear!
I have failed again.
I totally forgot to take a picture of the Worth a Mention Board.
I am so sorry.
Needless to say, EVERYONE was on the board this week because of your amazing achievements and behaviour on Sports Day.
I couldn't think of a more fitting tribute!

Back to your roots!

It's that time of year again, didn't that come round quickly?
Transfer Day will soon be upon us so we have been going back to the First Schools to meet the Year Four children and to reassure them that everything will be fine when they arrive!

Mrs Daniel, Ms Grassby and I had the pleasure of taking these lovelies back to Damers and look who we bumped into!

Transfer Day

Whilst on the subject of Transfer Day - Year Five will find out their Year Six Homebases on Thursday morning. They will spend the first two lessons with their new Homebase Tutors so they get to know each other.
We are hoping to provide a couple of extra transition sessions before the end of term to help ease the children into the wonderful world of Year Six.

Well, that's it for another week. I hope you have a fabulous few days and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week with more Year Five loveliness.
