... and breathe!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Another week has whizzed by and now we are about to embark on the first half term of the year! How did that happen? The children (and adults!) have had a lot to contend with over the last seven weeks so I think EVERYONE deserves the week off!

Celebration Assembly

It was absolutely brilliant to see so many of you at Thursday's Celebration Assembly - what a supportive bunch you are! It was so lovely to see so many of the children receive certificates at such at early stage of the school year - you must be working your metaphorical socks off!

Here are a few pictures of the assembly:

Thank you to Mr Murray for leading such a super assembly and for Mrs Hammonds for encouraging the children to show off their impressive singing skills - three part harmonies - who'd have thought?!

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's Terrific Ten - I know I say it every week but it is such a joy to see your names up on the board.

Whilst I was taking the photgraph on Friday, look who 'accidently' steeped into the picture...

Mrs Daniel - what are you like?!!

Super Science Homework!

Our Year Five corridor is looking rather gorgeous, if you don't mind me saying! Our boards are covered with fantastic writing on the Wonderful Writing Walls and there are some rather impressive Science Homeworks popping up here and there...

We love your creativity - long may it continue!

Golden Time

Well, we still haven't quite cracked this getting Golden Time lark but I do feel we are heading in the right direction?
Reading and Homework are still the main areas that a few of the children are struggling with.

We will get there in the end, right?

Pupil Voice Representatives

Over the last few days the whole school have been busy voting for their Pupil Voice Representatives and this includes Year Five. Once I have all the names from all the Year Five classes then I will post a picture of or new recruits.

I am so proud of all the children who put themselves forward to be Pupil Voice Representatives and even if you were not voted, we recognise that it takes a lot of courage and self belief to do this. I'll get a picture of you too!

We have a very vibrant and active Pupil Voice Committee at Dorchester Middle School and we have been meeting since the start of the school year.

To see what the Pupil Voice gets up to, I have just created a Pupil Voice Blog (go me!) so you can see all the things they do. You can find it on:

Non Uniform Day

On Friday November 4th Year Five will be holding a non-uniform day to raise more funds for Save the Children's child refugee fund. Pupils can wear suitable home clothes in exchange for bringing a £1 donation to school.

Well, that's it for another week, in fact, another two weeks! Thank you for making the first half term of DMS so enjoyable. I must say a HUGE thank you to the Year Five Team for being so brilliant - you are the best!

Have a good half term everyone - enjoy your well-deserved week off and we will look forward to seeing you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on Tuesday 1st November.

How do you do?

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Oh my goodness, I have got so much to share with you this week, I hardly know where to begin!
Are you ready?
On your marks, get set, go!

Parent Consultations

It was terrific to meet with so many lovely parents over two evenings this week. We hope that you found it an informative experience and that you were able to discuss how the children have settled in to their new school.

Our next official Parent Consultation Evenings will be held in the new year - as soon as I have the dates I'll let you know on the Blog. These evenings will be based on the children's academic progress and there will be an opportunity to have a look at the books and discuss the learning that has and will take place.

Afternoon of Sport

On Wednesday after school, the school was buzzing! There were so many sports fixtures going on I could barely keep up!

I had a lovely walk around the school grounds in the sunshine, dipping in and out of various matches.

Well done to the Year 5 Football team who were magnificent! No-one has told me the score though - maybe someone could let me know in the 'Comments' section?

Maths Group

In mine and Miss Enever's Maths Group - we have been learning about Place Value. It's such an important piece in the jigsaw as far as Maths is concerned.

The characters 'Decimal Dude' and 'Zero Hero' are really helping the children understand the complexities of Place Value!!

5CW's Science Investigation

The lesser-spotted 5CW were, well, spotted (!) in the pond area getting up to what can only be described as a science investigation.

It looks fascinating, what were you doing?
Answers in the comments section please!

Celebration Assembly

Just a quick reminder that it is our Celebration Assembly next Thursday 20th October. A label will be put into your child's Home/School Diary at the beginning of the week to let you know if they are receiving a certificate this time.

We look forward to welcoming you along.

Conscience Alley

In English, we are about to embark on an extended narrative unit of work.
As our starting point, we have been looking at a short animated film called 'One Man Band'.

We have been looking at dilemmas, particularly that of the little girl in the film.
We created a Conscience Alley to help her make up her mind.

Poor Miss Enever - she didn't know which side to choose!

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's terrific ten who have been chosen as Worth a Mention Children.

It is so lovely to see their names up on the board and for the continued variety of reasons for this acknowledgment. Well done - you are super stars!

Golden Time

Sadly, 21 children in Year 5 missed their Golden Time this week and three missed it as they had received a detention.

It is an improvement on last week (hurrah) but it would be so nice to see fewer children missing out, especially if we can help them in school. Along with the daily provision of Study Group and Homework Club, there is Study Extra that runs on a Wednesday after school until 4.30pm.
Might be worth considering?

STOP PRESS! SCHOOL DISCO PICTURES!
It was party, party, party time in DMS on Friday. Here are a few pictures of the Year Five children having what can only be described as, well, fun!

Thank you Miss Still for putting on such an excellent event!

So, that's it for this week. I hope you all have a good week and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week with lots of super pictures from the first Celebration Assembly of the year.

Please do feel free to post comments to accompany the blog, it so lovely to have a bit of 'audience participation' from time to time.
