Booktastic!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

This week, the blog is all about the wonderful English language and what a wonderful language it is! Anyway, enough of my potential waffling, let's crack on with it so you can see for yourselves.

World Book Day

World Book Day was an utter triumph and we were so impressed with all the incredible costumes that came through the Year Five Corridor on Thursday morning.

In the afternoon, we had to, literally, Drop Everything and Read. Just in case you were wondering, Mrs Daniel was reading 'When We Were Young'. I am will resist to make any comment on that nugget of information...

In 5ER, we played the 'Name that Character' game. It was a lot trickier to guess the characters on the headbands than anticipated. I took the headbands to Book Group after school and although they too found it tricky, they got there in the end!

Thank you to Mrs Scott and Mrs James for such an excellent day and an excellent Book Fair. The Book Fair's last trading day is Monday so please do come along to browse and buy!

Rosie

This is Rosie. She is lovely. She is also a very hardworking young lady and has made incredible progress in her writing. I was lucky enough to read her most recent piece of writing and quite frankly, I was blown away by the content.
Well done Rosie, keep up the hard work, it is clearly paying off!

5KD's French Lesson

OK 5KD. Miss Enever gave me these fantastic pictures of you in your French lesson but what on earth are you holding up? What have you been up to?
Please tell us in the comments section. Not only will we know the wonderful things you are doing in French, you'll also get a credit.
Win, win!

It's all about the apostrophe!

Apostrophes are tricky things aren't they? You use them to show that a letter or two are missing (omission) or you use them to show that something belongs to someone (possession).

A lot of children tend to use apostrophes when something is plural which is a big no, no.

Mr Duffy has been working hard to make sure the children in his class are using apostrophes correctly. To help spread the message, two of his children, Laura and Keeley,  made a visit to 5ER to help them see the error of their ways!

Not only did they teach us how to use the apostrophe for possession correctly, they also created a fabulous power point to help the children understand this particular concept.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention children. It's lovely to see how helpful, kind, considerate, creative and hard-working you all are.
Brilliant!

Golden Time

This week 10 Year Five children missed their Golden Time.
Oh dear.
Not one child received a detention which is extremely positive.
A lot of diaries were not signed and quite a few homeworks were missing this week.
Let's try for a 100% success rate next week...

Ancient Egyptian Day

Our fabulous Ancient Egyptian day will be held a week on Monday. We are busy planning and resourcing the day and we can't wait!
More details about the contents of the day next week.

Well, that's it for another jam-packed week.
Have a good week everyone and I'll see you back here next week for more Year Five news.
Remember to spoil your lovely Mums something rotten on Sunday, they are super heroes and need looking after at all times!
We will also look forward to seeing some of your parents at next week's Parent Consultations.

Mrs Ray

(who is thrilled with her Book Fair purchases which includes a rather super book on Ancient Egypt. Howard Carter eat your heart out!)

Welcome back!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I hope you all had a good half term - it flew by didn't it? It was lovely to see the children back all ready and raring to go on Monday morning (no, really, they were) but then we do have an incredibly busy and exciting half term ahead of us.

Anyway, enough from me, let's see what the children have been getting up to this week...

Fabulous Footballers

A massive congratulations to the Year Five Football team who performed so brilliantly on Thursday after school.

Words from Mr Roberts:

DMS v Sunninghill -WON 7-1

I had the pleasure of driving the Year 5 Football Team to the newly laid AstroTurf at Sunninghill after school today.

The boys were dominant in defence and imperious in attack against a Year 6 Prep School Team!

Jacob B scored 4
Lewis T scored 2
Captain Toby B scored 1

They were truly magnificent!

Fantastic boys and thank you for being such a credit to our Year Group and School.

5CW's Fact Finding Mission

In the middle of an English lesson the other day, I spotted 5CW outside my classroom. On further investigation, I found out that they were admiring our Wonderful Writing Wall and using it as an inspiration for their own writing which is such a compliment.

I can't wait to read your Neil Gaiman style instructions, please make sure it happens!

Worth a Mention Children

An enormous 'well done' to this week's Worth a Mention children.

Another wonderful range of reasons why you have been selected - brilliant!

Golden Time

Are you ready for this?
This week just 4, yes, 4 children missed their Golden Time this week.

Not one Year Five child was in Detention and ALL of 5CW and 5AD received their Golden Time!

Am I allowed to be quietly confident that this number might go down even further next week? Dare I?

Fingers crossed...

World Book Day

This Thursday sees the welcome arrival of World Book Day. As you know, we have lots of exciting things planned for the day as well as the opportunity to enter a couple of rather fabulous competitions.

Personally, I am planning to take part in the Extreme Reading competition. Are any of you planning to do this? If so, what are going to do or will it be a surprise?

Have you decided which book character you will be coming as yet? I am still undecided although I did come dressed as Burt from Ratburger one year...

Ancient Egypt Day

We have been busy planning our Ancient Egypt Day which will be held on Monday 14th March - exactly one month before we go to the British Museum.

Please remember that costumes are optional and that we will not be charging children if they choose to come to school dressed as an Ancient Egyptian.

I can't wait!

So, that's it for another week.
Final letters about the Museum trip should be heading your way in the next week where we will be asking for final payment (£10) and giving you more details about the day.

Have a good week everyone and I'll see you next week with lots of pictures from World Book Day.

Mrs Ray

(who is wondering if she could get away with coming as Hetty Feather? No, I didn't think so either!)

Short but Sweet

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Blimey, what a crazy but fabulous four days that was! We definitely worked those children right up to the very end of Thursday! We hope you all had a super extra day with the children, they certainly deserved that day off!

Now, just when you thought the Blog couldn't get any bigger, it just has so I'll get going straight away!

Celebration Assembly

A HUGE thank you to all 81 of you who attended Monday's Celebration Assembly. It was rather short and sweet but it was a pleasure and an honour to celebrate the children's many successes that were achieved in such a short space of time.

Here are a few pictures of our assembly for you to enjoy...

All the Worth a Mention Children!

Here are our super fit Biathletes who were mentioned on Monday. The photograph we took didn't quite fit you all in so hopefully this will make up for it.

Well done Year Five - I am very proud of you indeed!

Next Celebration Assembly

Our next Celebration Assembly will be on Wednesday 23rd March @ 9.30am

It will be a longer assembly (like the Christmas one) so that we can share with you what we have been up to this term as well as celebrating the children's many successes.

Book us in now!

Zapping works!

As reported in the last post, last week was our 'Switch Off' week where we were trying to reduce our electricity consumption by 10% by being mindful of how much electricity we use on a daily basis.

I am delighted to report that, as a school, we were able to reduce our electricity use by 12.6% which is fantastic!
Well done and thank you to everyone who played their part in this, especially the excellent 'Energy Champions' who clearly did a cracking job!

Milkshake Madness

It was 5ER and 5AD's turn to do their bit towards the fundraising fortnight so on Tuesday, the Milkshake Bar set up shop in the Hall.

I can't thank Craig's Dairy enough for the incredibly generous donation of milk for our event. What an absolute treat for our customers!

Craig's Farm Dairy Logo

We raised a very respectable £55 - not bad for a single break time.

Thank you to all of our helpers as well as Mr Palmer and the Food Links ladies who saved the day!

The Grand Total

So, our fundraising fortnight has come to an end and the children have raised an INCREDIBLE £550!

This has enabled us to reduce the cost of the British Museum Trip by £3 per child which is just brilliant! The trip will now cost £20 which is pretty impressive for a day out in London.

Letters requesting the balance will be distributed after half term.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Wonderful Writing Walls

Our corridor is looking rather lovely, if you don't mind me saying so.

One of the best things about the Year Five Corridor is the work that is on display courtesy of the Wonderful Writing Walls. These displays are constantly changing and evolving and are a joy to read on a regular basis.

We have some new additions to share with you:

Aren't they brilliant?

Down the Chute

5AD have cracked on with the next Science topic which is Materials and their Properties.

One of the first investigations that the children carry out is a test to see which material would make the best flooring.

This is what they got up to:

It looks like it was a lot of fun 5AD! Why don't you tell us a bit more about it via the comments section?

Instructions - Neil Gaiman Style Part Two

Not only are they super at Science, 5AD are also super writers.

Here are the instructions that they produced in the style of the wonderful Neil Gaiman.

Very, very clever indeed!

It's all in the past...

Meanwhile, in 5ER, we have just started our Ancient Egypt topic.
This week we were trying to get an idea of how long ago this period of history actually was. To help the children visualize this, I was able to tap into my extensive hat/dressing up collection!

Lola as Jesus to represent AD.

Joe as a wizard to represent the Medieval Age.

Alec representing Ancient Egypt (he wasn't very happy with me for  this!)

Lily representing the Tudor period by being Henry VIII.
Do you get it now 5ER?!

Ancient Egypt Day

We are busy planning our Ancient Egypt Day and can't wait to have a fun yet informative day off timetable. Please note the date has changed from Monday 29th February to Monday 14th March.
Letters will be coming home after half term.
We warn you now, the children can dress up like an Ancient Egyptian for the day. Here's a picture of Mrs Daniel to provide you with a bit of inspiration....

Worth a Mention Children

Many, many congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention children. As Head of Year, I am so impressed with the variety of reasons why your names are on the board.

Well done on such a super achievement - we are so proud of you.

Golden Time

Image result for hopeful minions

This week only 5 children missed their Golden Time.
No-one received a detention this week.
All of 5ER and 5PC received their Golden Time.

Keep up the good work Year Five!

Parent Consultations - March

You should have received your child's report a week ago. We hope that you found it informative and helpful.

If you have not already done so, please return the slips to confirm that you have received the report as soon as possible.

Also, if you would still like to make an appointment to see your child's English and/or Maths teacher it is not too late to do so but please be mindful that any specific time requests may already be booked.

So, that's it for another week. A massive thank you to those of you who have commented on the Blog in recent weeks. I have been signing credits but am more than aware that there are still a few pending.

I hope you all have a super half term and we'll look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 22nd February.

Mrs Ray
