Back on track.

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I hope you all had a good half term and that you were all able to recharge your metaphorical batteries. The children have really got back into the swing of things and I am tentatively delighted (is that even possible?!) as the lining up situation was so much better this week. Long may it continue - hence the 'tentative' bit in the last sentence!

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, let's crack on with what the children have been up to...

Spooky or what?

Following an excellent day at Thomas Hardye on Monday, it was lovely to welcome the children back on the Tuesday which just happened to be Halloween!

Being the lovely and supportive Progress Leader that I am (I think I may have missed 'bossy' in that mini list), I managed to provide the teachers with a little something to enter into the 'spirit' of the day!

I think everyone looks rather fetching, don't you? I think it is something we should wear on a more regular basis. Watch this space...

Worth a Mention Children

Massive congratulations to this week's Worth a mention Children.

I love this board as it never ceases to delight and impress me. Well done to this week's chosen children - what a fabulous achievement!

Golden Time

This week I had 28 children missing Golden Time. It is always tricky to get back into 'school mode' after a break (trust me, I really know how that one works) so I am hoping for an improvement next week.
The primary 'issues' are getting the reads in and the diary not being signed from the previous week (not half term though).

Fingers crossed that we all get back on the track for next week

Dorchester University - The Art of St Ives

Mrs Schnorr and I have been loving this module and we were delighted to welcome our new group on Wednesday.

As part of the Module, we go to Dorset County Hospital to look at the art which is  to view open for the public. Alex Mudin, the Hospital's Art Manager, took the children on a tour of the major art works that are housed in the hospital this week and it was brilliant.

Can't wait until next week where we will start to have a go at recreating the work of some of the artists that we saw!

Response Partners

Peer Assessment is a really powerful learning tool so 5MW gave it a go this week by looking at each other's Buddens Recount.

It was so uplifting to see the children helping each other - thank you for making it such a positive experience 5MW.

The Great DMS Bake Off

I can't wait to see the fabulous designs that you come have come up with! I'll be there on Monday with my trusty camera, ready to record the clever designs and to report who the winners were.

Good luck everyone!

Children in Need

It's that time of year again!
Dorchester Middle School will be supporting this incredible charity again this year. Details of how we can support on the actual day will be heading your way soon but in the meantime, please remember that the School Shop is selling a variety of merchandise that will go towards our fundraising day.

Personally, I will purchasing a rather fetching pair of Pudsey Ears...

Well, that's it for another week!

I hope you all have a good few days and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week for more news and updates on the wonderful world of Year Five.

Pause for thought...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Many apologies for not getting the Blog to you sooner but I have been away enjoying the half term break with my very own Year Five Cub. However, I'm back now and ready and raring to tell you all about last week.

Celebration Assembly

What a super duper assembly that was! It was fabulous to see all 98 Parents/Carers/Grandparents squeezed into our humble Drama Hall. Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a special event.

Most importantly, a HUGE well done to all the fantastic children who received Bronze, Silver and (even a Gold) Stripes for all their hard work so far this term and to those who you who received various certificates for your achievements. Brilliant!

Thank you for the lovely singing and to Bruno for playing the piano with such confidence and style. We definitely have a star in the making there.

Our next assembly will be just before we break up for Christmas and, hopefully, in the morning. As soon as I have a date, I will let you know via text and publish it on this Blog.

Dorchester University - all change

I thoroughly enjoyed the first module (The Art of St Ives) and am looking forward to meeting my new recruits next week. The children were told their new modules just before half term so hopefully they have remembered what they are doing but never fear, we will remind them...

Year Five Footballers

Huge congratulations to our wonderful Year Five footballers who, by judging from the report below, played an absolute blinder last week.

This is Mr Roberts' account of the match:

Year 5 Football
DMS v St Mary's Middle School
Tuesday 17th October 2017

Lost 2-1

The grey Autumnal skies failed to dampen the Year 5 DMS Football Teams spirits this afternoon.

Pathetic Fallacy produced a twisted lack of conformity ,seeing our pupil's enthusiasm for the beautiful game in abundance.

St Mary’s Middle School were in a defiant mood, we had to labour for every ounce of possession - we were gifted nothing!
Oliver B was a Trojan, his defensive qualities were evident to all. Jadan was immense in goal, Isaac remained a thorn in the villagers side.

It was our Captain Theo that broke the deadlock with a shot of great accuracy-the team celebrated like a Cup Final win!

The match saw 18 players represent DMS today - 6 debutants, an experience that will never be taken away.

Well done Year 5
What a team!

Super Surroundings

I love our Year Five Corridor, I really do! From the times table bunting to the Wonderful Writing displays, our corridor is a rich, vibrant and celebratory place to be.

We have a new area in our corridor - we have only gone and made ourselves a Reading Corner!

It's a 'work in progress' i.e. I am so going to add fairy lights and a bit of bling but we have already been listening to children read there. It's lovely to have somewhere that's a bit different for the children to go.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge, no, gigantic congratulations to the children who found themselves on the Worth a Mention Board on Friday. An incredible range of reasons this week which always makes my heart sing.

Well done one and all!

So, that's it for another week.

I hope you all had a relaxing and restful half term (who am I kidding?!) and that the batteries have been recharged so that everyone is ready and raring to go on Tuesday 31st October.

See you next week!

Mrs Ray

(who had a lovely time in France but is now about to embark on a Mark-a-thon...!)

Never let it be said that school is far from my mind!
Year Six's impressive writing came to the beach with me...

If you go down to the woods today...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, another busy week, the highlight being our trip to Buddens.
I am pleased to report that the lining up is slowly getting better, however,  I have had a few members of staff informing me of the inconsistency of this new life skill so I'm afraid we're not quite there. Yet.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings - let's crack on!

Celebration Assembly Reminder

We are so looking forward to seeing you on Thursday for our Celebration Assembly.

Please remember to sign in as you arrive at school and we will bring you down to the Hall as soon as it is ready. I want you now, there may be a whiff of school lunches as you enter!

In order for a credit to 'count', it needs to be initialled by, where possible, the teacher who awarded it in the first place. Just a dot in the diary does not count!

Parent Consultations

We are looking forward to seeing you on Monday and Wednesday for our first round of Parent Consultations.
The aim of the evening is to discuss how your child is settling into their new school and how they are coping with life in Year Five.

If you have not yet made an appointment it is still worth checking to see if your child's Homebase Tutor has any spaces.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to the whole year group!
It was such a lovely surprise to see everyone up there and quite rightly so!
I am so delighted that you represented the school so positively - well done!

Sporting Achievements

Our Year Five children have been very busy at becoming sporting stars in their own right!

We have had Year Five children participating in Netball, Rugby and Football matches in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, our Year Five boys played a match against Radipole Primary School.
Here is the report of the game from Mr Roberts:

Although our youngest pupils scored less goals than their Weymouth adversaries - they were not beaten.
Our Year 5 Football Team showed a resilience that belied their young ages - they refused to give in,they tackled furiously, tracked every player and showed great dignity.
Well done boys.
Star Performer - Harry B

Buddens

What a fantastic trip that was!
Our Thursday trip was full of sunshine and squirrels. We saw some incredible things and it was such a joy to watch our children enjoy the delights of such beautiful surroundings.

Here are a few pictures of our day...

When we got back to school, we had a good look at the impressive things that the children had collected.

It was a truly fabulous day and the children got a lot out of the day. We are now busy with the follow-up work, starting with the writing of a recount of our visit.

Well, that's it for another week. I hope you have a good week and I will look forward to seeing you back here with lots of tales of the final week of the first half term.
