Short but Sweet

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Blimey, what a crazy but fabulous four days that was! We definitely worked those children right up to the very end of Thursday! We hope you all had a super extra day with the children, they certainly deserved that day off!

Now, just when you thought the Blog couldn't get any bigger, it just has so I'll get going straight away!

Celebration Assembly

A HUGE thank you to all 81 of you who attended Monday's Celebration Assembly. It was rather short and sweet but it was a pleasure and an honour to celebrate the children's many successes that were achieved in such a short space of time.

Here are a few pictures of our assembly for you to enjoy...

All the Worth a Mention Children!

Here are our super fit Biathletes who were mentioned on Monday. The photograph we took didn't quite fit you all in so hopefully this will make up for it.

Well done Year Five - I am very proud of you indeed!

Next Celebration Assembly

Our next Celebration Assembly will be on Wednesday 23rd March @ 9.30am

It will be a longer assembly (like the Christmas one) so that we can share with you what we have been up to this term as well as celebrating the children's many successes.

Book us in now!

Zapping works!

As reported in the last post, last week was our 'Switch Off' week where we were trying to reduce our electricity consumption by 10% by being mindful of how much electricity we use on a daily basis.

I am delighted to report that, as a school, we were able to reduce our electricity use by 12.6% which is fantastic!
Well done and thank you to everyone who played their part in this, especially the excellent 'Energy Champions' who clearly did a cracking job!

Milkshake Madness

It was 5ER and 5AD's turn to do their bit towards the fundraising fortnight so on Tuesday, the Milkshake Bar set up shop in the Hall.

I can't thank Craig's Dairy enough for the incredibly generous donation of milk for our event. What an absolute treat for our customers!

We raised a very respectable £55 - not bad for a single break time.

Thank you to all of our helpers as well as Mr Palmer and the Food Links ladies who saved the day!

The Grand Total

So, our fundraising fortnight has come to an end and the children have raised an INCREDIBLE £550!

This has enabled us to reduce the cost of the British Museum Trip by £3 per child which is just brilliant! The trip will now cost £20 which is pretty impressive for a day out in London.

Letters requesting the balance will be distributed after half term.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Wonderful Writing Walls

Our corridor is looking rather lovely, if you don't mind me saying so.

One of the best things about the Year Five Corridor is the work that is on display courtesy of the Wonderful Writing Walls. These displays are constantly changing and evolving and are a joy to read on a regular basis.

We have some new additions to share with you:

Aren't they brilliant?

Down the Chute

5AD have cracked on with the next Science topic which is Materials and their Properties.

One of the first investigations that the children carry out is a test to see which material would make the best flooring.

This is what they got up to:

It looks like it was a lot of fun 5AD! Why don't you tell us a bit more about it via the comments section?

Instructions - Neil Gaiman Style Part Two

Not only are they super at Science, 5AD are also super writers.

Here are the instructions that they produced in the style of the wonderful Neil Gaiman.

Very, very clever indeed!

It's all in the past...

Meanwhile, in 5ER, we have just started our Ancient Egypt topic.
This week we were trying to get an idea of how long ago this period of history actually was. To help the children visualize this, I was able to tap into my extensive hat/dressing up collection!

Lola as Jesus to represent AD.

Joe as a wizard to represent the Medieval Age.

Alec representing Ancient Egypt (he wasn't very happy with me for  this!)

Lily representing the Tudor period by being Henry VIII.
Do you get it now 5ER?!

Ancient Egypt Day

We are busy planning our Ancient Egypt Day and can't wait to have a fun yet informative day off timetable. Please note the date has changed from Monday 29th February to Monday 14th March.
Letters will be coming home after half term.
We warn you now, the children can dress up like an Ancient Egyptian for the day. Here's a picture of Mrs Daniel to provide you with a bit of inspiration....

Worth a Mention Children

Many, many congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention children. As Head of Year, I am so impressed with the variety of reasons why your names are on the board.

Well done on such a super achievement - we are so proud of you.

Golden Time

This week only 5 children missed their Golden Time.
No-one received a detention this week.
All of 5ER and 5PC received their Golden Time.

Keep up the good work Year Five!

Parent Consultations - March

You should have received your child's report a week ago. We hope that you found it informative and helpful.

If you have not already done so, please return the slips to confirm that you have received the report as soon as possible.

Also, if you would still like to make an appointment to see your child's English and/or Maths teacher it is not too late to do so but please be mindful that any specific time requests may already be booked.

So, that's it for another week. A massive thank you to those of you who have commented on the Blog in recent weeks. I have been signing credits but am more than aware that there are still a few pending.

I hope you all have a super half term and we'll look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 22nd February.

Yummy Scrummy!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Now, before I go any further, I need to warn you now that this week's contribution to the blog is MEGA! Clear yourself some space in your diary as we need your full and undivided attention.

Comfy?
Ready?
Let's go!

Instructions to Thomas Hardye School Neil Gaiman Style

Oh my goodness me! HOW much fun have we had writing a set of instructions in the style of the fantasy writer Neil Gaiman?

Image result for instructions neil gaiman

5ER took it one step further (of course!) and took a visit up to Thomas Hardye's so that we could write instructions on how to get there from Dorchester Middle School.

I took loads of photographs to document the route so we wouldn't forget what we saw.

Here are a few of the things we spotted en route with the instructions that we produced...

Be silent past the room of whispers and discussion. The witches and wizards that dwell there have plans for you. If you enter, you may never return.

Do not be afraid of the winged demon that dwells on the sleeping slope. He can be vicious. The answer to his riddle is simply “a squared plus z cubed equals delicious pie”.

Walk confidently outside the Castle of Instruction, beware of what is behind you. You might discover a bundle of needy offspring. Don’t be afraid. Find refuge behind the poison ivy bush.

This was our final destination...

What would YOU write here? Any suggestions (in the style of Neil Gaiman) could easily get you a CREDIT! Leave a comment and if I approve (!) then a credit will be winging it's way to you!

Hot Chocolate Cafe

Our Fundraising Fortnight kicked off on Tuesday with 5KD's brilliant Hot Chocolate Cafe.

All hands on deck!
An incredible £70 was raised - well done and Thank You 5KD and all the children who supported them.

Cake Sale

As you brought in so many yummy cakes, we had to hold the cake sale over 2 break times!

5CW and 5PC you raised an amazing £145!
Wow, wow, wow!

Next week's Fundraising Activities

Don't forget that next week 5ER and 5AD will be running our Milkshake Bar in the Hall during Tuesday break time.

The final event will the Non Uniform Day on Thursday where, in return for £1, you can wear your home clothes for the day.

I will announce our final fundraising total here next week.

Have you been zapped?

This week has been 'Switch Off Week' where, as a school, we have been trying to reduce the amount of electricity that we use by 10%.

If any of our lights or electrical equipment were found to be 'on' then, unless there was a reason, we were 'zapped'.

I think we were all 'zapped' at one point. This resulted in many of us being in the dark for the rest of the week!

Tia in 5KD really took our 'Switch Off Week' to heart and produced this fabulous poster to make us more 'Eco aware'.

Fantastic!

Harry Potter Night

Thursday night was our Book Group's Harry Potter Celebration Night and we invited a few of the Year Five children along to help us celebrate.

We had a brilliant evening thanks to Mrs Scott, er, sorry, I meant Professor Mcgonagall, who really made it, quite literally, a magical evening.
Can anyone spot who came as Lunar Lovegood?

Celebration Assembly reminder

A final reminder that it is our third Celebration Assembly of the year this coming Monday. If your child is receiving a certificate then there should be  a label in their Home School Diary.

Please be at school as near to 1pm as possible and we will start the assembly at 1.10pm and it will last for approx 20 - 25 minutes.

See you then.

Worth a Mention Children

HUGE congratulations to his week's Worth a Mention children. It's so lovely to see your names on the board for such a variety of reasons.
Well done!

Afternoon of Sport

A huge 'well done' and thank you to all the Year Five children who were involved in Wednesday's sporting spectacular.

A special mention must go to the Year Five Girl's Football team and the Year Five Basketball team who played extremely well and were excellent ambassadors for our school.

Back in the day...

Poppy's Mum made an incredible discovery the other day, the Home School Dairy she owned when she was at Dorchester Middle School.

This is what the timetable looked like then:

When Poppy showed it to Mrs White, she was instantly transported back in time!

Which version do you prefer?!

Golden Time

Ten children missed their Golden Time this week which is double the amount from last week. One child missed their Golden Time due to receiving a detention.

No-one in 5ER missed their Golden Time this week - yeah!

Golden Time will be on Thursday next week.
Surely we can ALL receive Golden Time this time, can't we?

It's all in your hands Year Five, all in your hands!!

So, that's it for another week. I will look forward to seeing some of you at our Celebration Assembly on Monday.

Have a good week everyone and don't forget your money for the next installment of fundraising!

Mrs Ray

(who is really looking forward to going back to her Dairy Farming roots on Tuesday!)
