We're walking on sunshine...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Glorious weather this week wasn’t it? I am really hoping that the weather continues to behave itself for Wednesday's Sports Day. Miss Woodley and I are (foolishly) representing Year Five in the Staff Relay so it may well be that we are doing 'rain dances' the night before!

Anyway, enough of my wittering - let's see what they gang have been up to this week... 

To Infinity and Beyond!

So, imagine how impressed I was whilst out on duty this Friday before school? Dotted amongst the vast crowds of children, were a few lone children proudly clutching their precious creations of the Solar System. This was the result of 5CW's Science Homework and they were brilliant!

Ted was asked to be my intrepid reporter but because they were all so busy having fun, he only took one additional picture!

...and that's just a small selection! Aren't they incredible?

Let's hope Ted can get more pictures for us next week!

Worth a Mention Children

Well done to everyone who is the board of fame this week.

It's great to see that some excellent writing has been going on in 5CW and that a lot of loveliness is going on in Year Five in general.

I'm loving Mrs Daniel's self portrait. Well, I think it's her...

Max has been mentioned for his handwriting and it has improved beyond recognition! The poor boy came into Room 4 during his Golden Time to get his picture taken but, as I was busy, he ended up missing a lot of it! 

Oh no! 

Hopefully the ten credits I gave him will compensate!

Advertising Executives of the Future?

In English, we are starting to look at persuasive writing and in 5MW we had a go at creating adverts in small groups, using the features that we had been learning about. Once we had done that, all the groups had a look at each other's work and edited it using a Purple Pen.

It was brilliant - we had an absolute ball looking at what everyone had got up to! It was great to hear the children being 'critical friends'.

Well done 5MW.

 Nag, nag, nag!

So, I'm still having to remind children to eat healthy snacks at break time and NOT crisps!

I am also having to remind them NOT to wear trainer socks!

Please help me!

Minding that Gap!

We had our second Mind the Gap lesson on Friday and after three days of testing, it was the perfect antidote!

We are perfectly matched!

(who went to London this weekend to see her sister and go to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I have come to the conclusion that if a cardboard box painted in different bright colours can be exhibited in the Royal Academy then there's hope for me and Mrs Daniel yet!)

Speeding along...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I don't know about you, but I don't feel like my feet have even touched the ground this week! We are knee deep in report writing at the moment as well as being fully emerged in the joys of teaching. We had a special treat for the children this week as far as their English lessons were concerned but more of that later.

This is a bit of a 'wordy' Blog this week so I will try and get more pictures of the children into next week's edition.

As always, huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children.

Mind the Gap!

Every Friday afternoon, until the end of term, we will be delivering a series of lessons called 'Mind the Gap'. These lessons are Grammar and Punctuation orientated and revise what we have covered over the academic year. The idea is that we make sure that the children are 'Year Six Ready' as far as SPaG is concerned.

We mix all the classes up so we can differentiate our delivery, making sure we all cover all the content but in our own individual Year Five way! 

What fun! 

I can't think of a better way to end the week!

Healthy Schools

At the risk of sounding like an old moan, please remember that we are a Healthy School. This means that your break time snack should be deemed as 'healthy'. As much as I love them, crisps have not been classed as a 'healthy food' and should not be eaten at break time! 

Think carefully about what you choose to eat at break time - you really don't want me nagging you do you?

Uniform Check Results

As promised, Mr Murray and I did a quick uniform check on Monday and I am delighted to say that Year Five were pretty jolly good! 

A few trainer socks are sneaking back in from time to time (did you see what I did there?!) and the girl's skirt lengths can be questionable but on the whole, good job Year Five!

Golden Time

The numbers of children who missing their Golden Time are definitely reducing and could be even smaller if Reads and Home/School Diaries are signed. Homework can always be completed in Study Group at lunch times but it's down to you to make sure that this happens!

Whilst it's lovely to hang out with you for 25 minutes on a Friday afternoon, I'm pretty sure that you would much rather be hanging out with your friends, enjoying the rewards of extra playtime!

Here we are again!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I hope you all had a good half term and lots of fun in the process. As usual, we hit the ground running on our return to school on Monday and are back on it as far as the learning is concerned.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations for the children who found themselves on this week's prestigious Worth a Mention Board.

It is great to see that Sport, endeavour and achievement is recognised by your teachers. 

I also see that Mrs Daniel continues to surpass herself as far as her drawing is concerned.

Well done one and all!

Dippy's Legacy

We all thoroughly enjoyed visiting Dippy when he was in situ at Dorset County Museum didn't we? Year Six have produced incredible leaflets and some of Year Five have written terrific descriptions of Dippy - I have sent a few to the Museum as I was so impressed with them.

One of the lasting legacies is the fabulous piece of art that was created by the whole school during our Dippy Day in April.

We now have a constant reminder of the day that Dippy came into our lives. It's brilliant isn't it? Every single child in the school contributed to this - how incredible is that?

Year Five's Sporting Heroes

Our school has many, many strengths and our excellent Sports Department is one of them. It has been a great week of Sport in Year Five and I am so excited for and proud of the children that took part in two events in particular. The following words are by Mr Roberts.

Anyone for Tennis?

Well done to our trio of Key Stage Two tennis players which saw Elliot win 2 matches and James 

1 match. It was a great experience for pupils to play at Dorchester Tennis and Squash Club.

Year 5 Cricket Team

Our magnificent Year 5 Cricket Team rose to the almighty challenge of a West Dorset Cricket Tournament today.

They were imperious in all they did,playing like a First Class England 11 facing a Test Match.

Our pupils deserve applause and adoration for their sportsmanship and conduct.

DMS played 4 and WON 4 taking 17 wickets in the process.

How fantastic is that?

Well done and a HUGE thank you to all of our Year Five children.

Golden Time

There was a huge improvement in the number of children who missed their Golden Time this so well done Year Five - you may well be heading towards me humiliating myself by skipping in heels yet!

Keep reading, keep doing your homework, keep getting your diary signed and keep out of the Detention Room.

Simple.

Uniform Reminder

In the newsletter that went out at the end of half term, we reminded everyone that correct uniform needs to be worn at school. One of the stipulations is that trainer socks are not to be worn however, after doing an impromptu spot check during my Lunchtime Duty on Friday, there are A LOT of children wearing them. They are not part of our uniform so please don't wear them! 

Mr Murray and I will be checking again on Monday - you have been warned!!

Sowing the Seeds...

So, I bought a few plants from Miss Still a couple of weeks ago (see the last Blog) and I am pleased to announce that I haven't manage to kill them, yet!

I am so proud of having something in my garden that was grown and nurtured by children in our school. (Green) fingers crossed they survive. I'll keep you updated.
