Whirlwind!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we have had yet another busy week this week! I warn you now, it's another epic so make sure that you are nice and comfortable with the drink of your choice accompanying you!

Hot Chocolate Cafe

A big thank you to Mr Duffy and 5KD for providing such an efficient and well run cafe. As you opened the classroom door, there was definitely a distinct waft of chocolate in the air! Delicious!

It was a HUGE hit as you can see by the children's smiley faces. The question is 5KD, how much did you raise?

Chocolatey Heaven

Whilst we're on the subject of chocolate, Miss Enever's Hot Cholocate Cones were a massive hit and raised £43 in total.

They all sold out within a couple of break times and there were still children who wanted to buy them even after they had all gone.

Bookmarks

Mrs Lister is one of the most creative people I know and this was reflected in the AMAZING bookmarks that she made especially for Year Five to help with our fundraising.

The Frogs alone took 5 hours to make each one and sold out virtually straight away!

The Book Marks alone raised £91.50 - fantastic!

Next week's Fundraising Activities

Monday is the Cake Sale event in the Year Five Corridor. Cakes and biscuits will range from 10p upwards.

On Wednesday we will be selling Milkshakes and Cookies in the Hall. For the bargain price of 50p you will get a milkshake and cookie to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

I will give you the grand total of the money we raised in our Celebration Assembly on Thursday and on the Blog next week.

How exciting!

Celebration Assembly

Just to remind you that our next Celebration Assembly will be on Thursday at 10.15am. If you could arrive in school as close to 10am that would be great. Please remember to sign in on your arrival.
It will be a fairly short assembly (famous last words) in the Drama Hall, probably around 30 minutes.

On this occasion, we will not be inviting parents/carers back to the classroom as that is something we are aiming to do at the end of each term.

Worth a Mention Children

I know I say this every week but I must send huge congratulations in the direction of this week's Worth a Mention Children.

Well done one and all!

Strong punctuation!

Did you know that specific punctuation has a certain amount of 'strength' when it comes to writing? We had great fun exploring this in our English lessons.

The question is, which one is the strongest?!

Harry Potter Party Night

On Thursday, Book Group, along with a few invited guests, partied like it was Platform 9 and 3/4!

We had a fabulous time celebrating all things Harry Potter - the children's knowledge was incredible, I was very impressed with them all!

A HUGE Thank You to Mrs Scott for organising the whole event from beginning to end, it was so lovely to see how much the children enjoyed themselves.

Disappointing Behaviour

I hate to add a negative slant to the blog but I have been disheartened with the nature of some of the pastoral issues we have dealt with this week.

Year Five, you are lovely, lovely children but sometimes, the way you interact with each other is not lovely at all.

We are all human beings with feelings, please remember that.

Super Schools

Every two years. Mr Roberts and the PE Department organise a fabulous event called 'Super Schools'. This year it will be held on Wednesday 22nd February.

Taken from their website:

SuperSchools for over 40 years has provided a platform of education through using a fun, inspiring and sporting approach.

This combined with additional benefit of raising funds for schools from using the power of sport.
Pupils have the opportunity to rub shoulders with their Olympic and Paralympic heroes.
The promotion of a health lifestyles and increasing the aspiration of young children is our focal point of this education.
SuperSchools is now focusing on its next 40 year chapter. We are always in the process of finding new ways to inspire and educate school children, through traditional and non traditional sports, however our company core focus remains the same; to educate, inspire, promote a healthy lifestyle and increase children aspirations.

There will be a Pre-Event assembly explanatory talk this Wednesday where the children will have the opportunity to meet the organiser, Rhys Williams and our Celebrity Sportsman, Mountain Bike Champion, Grant Fielder.

Letters will go home to explain the whole event and process in more detail.

Well, that's it for another week. I did warn you that is was another Mrs Ray epic! Honestly, War and Peace has nothing on me!

Have a good week and I will look forward to seeing some of you at Thursday's Celebration Assembly.

Variety is the spice of life, right?

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, another cracking week in the life of Year Five. I hope I didn't upset too many children during my assembly on 'Tolerance' this week - I'll let the children explain that one to you! Have you been extra tolerant ever since? Fingers crossed that you have...

Anyway, as usual I have lots to share with you so here we go.

Light Bulb Moments

We have been thoroughly enjoying our Electricity topic in Year Five and we have learnt a lot in the process. On Friday, I dragged 5ER outside to make my point about Electrons.

Miss Enever was a terrific 'cell', making sure that the electrons were refuelled as they passed through. When the fuel ran out though, our electrons stopped working.
I think/hope the point has been made.

A very special guest

Friday was a very busy day as we also welcomed a visitor to the school - Mabel!

Mabel was very lucky as she got to listen to some of the children read although I think she may have had a bit of trouble trying to record it in their Home/School Diaries!
The children assure me that she is a good listener.
Thank you Ms Seymour for bringing her in to meet the children, she really did brighten up our day.

Ancient Egypt Day

I am delighted to announce that we will be holding an Ancient Egypt Day on Friday 24th February.
During this day, we will be coming off timetable for the day and running workshops based on various aspects of life in Ancient Egypt.

It would be fantastic if we could get as many children (and adults) as possible to dress up like Ancient Egyptians for the day. We will be holding a Fashion Show during the day and there will be prizes for the best costumes.

Put the date in your diary, it's going to be a good one!

'Ello, 'Ello, 'Ello!

The children in my Maths Group were very busy learning about fractions this week. In order to help the children, we re-introduced The Fraction Police.
Here we have PC Numerator, PC Dividing Line and PC Denominator.

We had to do a quick recruitment on Friday and gave Belle the job of PC Denominator.

They have really helped the children understand what the parts of the fraction are called and what their functions are. Well done everyone!

Worth a Mention Children

As always, huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children.

There's a lot of hard work going on in Year Five isn't there? Well done one and all!

Chocolate, chocolate everywhere...

Don't forget that it's the Hot Chocolate Cafe at break time on Monday in Room 5 - bring your 50ps to buy a hot chocolate and biscuit.

Miss Enever will be selling her Hot Chocolate Cones every break time this week and Mrs Lister has made some AMAZING hand crafted things for you to buy -I don't want to give the game away as you see if for yourself from Monday.

Sugar rush here we come - think of us on Monday won't you?

Stripey Alex!

Mr Palmer came to find Alex to present him with his Table Tennis Stripe due to being an incredible player and showing the other year groups how it's done. As a result, he also received a 'Star Performer' stripe. Well done Alex.

It's all French to me!

What is Leo doing here? He looks happy, it looks like French so it looks as though whatever story this picture is telling us it's a win, win situation!
Anyone wish to expand on this?

Pyramid Sporting Fixtures

An immense congratulations to all DMS pupils involved in sport after school on Wednesday.

180 pupils from the Middle Schools braved the elements and showed impressive resilience in the face of competition. This included the Year Five Football team and the Year 5/6/7 Hockey Team.

 Fantastic!

Blimey, that was an epic blog wasn't it? We wouldn't have it any other way though would we? I hope you all have a fabulous week and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week for more fun and games.
