Joy is all around us!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

What a terrific week! I don't know if I speak for everyone but I have had yet another fun teaching week! 5MW and I have had a ball in English and are about to face 5KD in a 'Storm Slam' (I will leave the children to explain that one to you!) in a few days.
We have had lots of lovely successes and I experienced my first Speed Sharing session with the super-talented 5AD. To see how much progress you have made in your writing in just one term is a joy to behold.

Why 5AD didn't learn anything this week...

Mrs Daniel's naughty cat Oscar has been at it again! He has been stopping Mrs Daniel from working by demanding frequent cuddles. A tough choice at the best of times I guess?

However, he has helped her plan her English, something to do with main and subordinate claws...?!?

Happy Harrison

Look at the beaming smile coming from this young man's face! This is a boy who has missed many a Golden Time but this week he has worked extra hard to earn it so we are all delighted for him!

Well done Harrison - keep up the good work - we are so proud of you and ALL of the children who work hard to earn their Golden Time!

Worth a Mention Children

As I am on the subject of children that we are proud of, feast your eyes on this week's Worth a mention Children...

Well done one and all - I am thrilled for you!

Viking Invasion

On Friday, Dorchester Middle School was invaded by Vikings! No, seriously, they were!
Well, if you don't believe me, here is my evidence...

As you can see from the pictures, they were on a recruitment drive and I think they were successful in their mission, don't you?
Thank you to Mrs Cook for organising these fearsome warriors to visit the Year Five children, I hope we didn't frighten them too much!

Marvellous Milkshakes

As previously mentioned, we will be starting our British Museum fund raising next week.
We will kick it off with our Milkshake and Cookie Stall that will be held in the Hall on Wednesday break time. For the bargain price of 50p, you will get a delicious milkshake and scrummy cookie.
What is there not to like?
See you there!

Celebration Assembly

Just to let you know that our next Celebration Assembly will be held on the last day of the half term, Thursday 8th February at 2.05pm in the Drama Hall

Well, that's it for another week!
I hope you are all in the process of having a fabulous weekend and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week!

Mrs Ray

(who is starting to get a bit nervous about taking part in the London Winter Run for Cancer Research next month. It seemed like such a good idea at the time...!)

Back to life, back to reality?

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Let me start this post by wishing you all an extremely Happy New Year! I hope you had a fun holiday and that the return to school on the 2nd, yes, 2nd January wasn't too traumatic and I'm thinking about the adults here, not the children!

Once we all got over the shock of not being in our PJs and not watching television first thing in the morning, I am happy to reassure you that the children have got over the shock of having to go to school bright and early and have settled back into school beautifully, cracking on with their learning in the process!

Award-winning Lucia

Many congratulations to Lucia who was the Year Five Winner of the Christmas Art Competition.
Well done Lucia - what a fabulous design!

Worth a Mention Children

Many congratulations to the children who found their names on this week's Worth a Mention Board this week.
I am very proud of each and everyone of you! Bravo!

Ancient Egypt Day

On Friday 23rd February, Year Five will be coming off timetable for the day and experiencing 'Ancient Egypt Day'. It is a fabulous day that gives the children (and staff!) the opportunity to dress (and walk) like an Egyptian for the day.

Forewarned is forearmed and all that...

British Museum Trip Fund Raising Time

Whilst I'm on the subject of  Ancient Egypt, our exciting trip to The British Museum is hurtling towards us so it's time for us to crack on with the fund raising!
We have already raised £137.25 from our sale of the Christmas decorations but that is just a drop in the ocean!

From the week beginning 15th January, we will be holding a series of fundraising events. These events will be spread over two weeks and, I warn you now, sugar is heavily involved! Once the dates of the various events have been finalised then we will let you know what is happening when so that you are prepared for the distribution of funds to your offsrping!

We will be selling beautifully handcrafted bookmarks, holding a cake sale, running a Hot Chocolate Cafe and making milkshakes to be consumed with a cookie.

You can see why we need two weeks can't you?

Brace yourselves - that's the best advice I can give!

Well, that's it for another week.I hope you have all recovered from the frantic Christmas Holiday and that the week back to school has gone well for you all.

See you next week!

Mrs Ray

(who can't quite work out how marking builds up so incredibly quickly! Does it breed?)

I survived an extremely cold and windy bike ride on Saturday - what on earth was I thinking?!

All is calm...?

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, this is being posted a bit later than I had anticipated but my goodness me - how busy was that lead up to Christmas?! I hope that you all had a great Christmas Day and that you are enjoying spending time with your families and making the most of having some very well deserved time off!

The end of the Autumn Term was as busy and chaotic as usual but what a cracker it was!

Now, there are LOADS of pictures for you to enjoy so make sure that you are sitting comfortably before you begin...

Christmas Concert

What a fabulous evening this was! A lovely, low key event that was enjoyed by all who attended.

Well done to our brave Year Five children who performed brilliantly and who were a joy to behold.
I was so proud of you.

Christmas Decorations

Over the last couple of weeks, these lovely children have given up all of their break times in order to sell our gorgeous 'Little People' Christmas Decorations. They are super stars aren't they?

Due to their dedication and excellent sales techniques, we have raised an incredible £137.25 that will go towards our British Museum Trip and will contribute to the reduction the overall cost of this visit.

Calendar Competition Winner

Huge congratulations to Lola in 5MW who was one of the winners of the DMS Calendar Competition.

She won an impressive 'stash' from one of sponsors, Mole Valley Farmers.

Well done Lola!

Christmas Jumpers

When you came through the doors on that last Friday of term, we were not disappointed! You all have the coolest Christmas Jumpers EVER!

As a school, we have raised £427 for Save the Children which is simply fantastic!
Well done one and all!

Christmas Buddies

It was so lovely to see our Buddies on the last day of term.

It's always good to have a catch up over a Christmassy word search isn't it?

Celebration Assembly

I have to say that this assembly was an absolute highlight of my year! We had 115 parents/carers/Grandparents in attendance which was incredible.

It was a super assembly that was packed full of celebration, laughter and Christmas...

I hope you enjoyed the assembly as much as we did. The class performances were excellent and we all enjoyed what you had prepared and rehearsed for us.

Congratulations to everyone for their hard earned awards, I hope your parents have had hours of fun sewing all those super stripes on your sweatshirt sleeves!

Worth a Mention Children

Last week's Worth a Mention children were Aldo, Luca, Tyler, Max, Millie, Issac, Dylan, Layla, Alfie and the children in 5MW who took part in the Christmas Carol Service.

This week...

Yes, that is indeed Mrs Daniel.
I am so sorry, we did try to prevent her from 'drawing' but she's on a roll now and there is no stopping her.

See what I mean?!

Well done EVERYONE for being Worth a Mention Children, you really do deserve it.

Chemistry Show

Our lucky Year Five children were treated to the Explorer Dome Company's incredible Chemistry Show courtesy of the Science Department.

The children had a fabulous time and learnt a lot through all the incredible experiments that they observed and took part in.

Thank You Mr Lane.

Well, that is it for this year! I will be back in January to continue to report on the comings and goings of Year Five with my usual sense of pride.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to the amazing Year Five Team who are, in my opinion,  the best in the business.

Have a fabulous time and enjoy the rest of your break.
I will look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 2nd January 2018!

Mrs Ray

(who would quite like to stop eating now but just doesn't quite know how!)

Happy New Year from The Rays!
