Ho, ho, ho!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Well, here we are, hurtling towards Christmas at break-neck speed and there is no sign of any breaking let alone stopping! We've had such a busy week this week (just for a change!) and next week looks even busier. 

I better crack on then...

Christmas Carol Service

On Tuesday evening, the annual DMS Carol Service was held at St Mary's Church.

It was a lovely, lovely evening with a mixture of songs, sketches, readings, hymns and prayers, just as it should be. 

I was delighted to see so many Year Five children taking part in the evening - these pictures just show a few of the children who were involved in the Drama Club's songs and sketches. 

There were quite few children in the Orchestra and I'm sorry that I didn't get any pictures of them but I will be at the Christmas Concert on Wednesday - you have been warned!

Paper Aeroplane Competition

So, you saw the pictures of the planes being created so now it's time to see how they actually flew! We had so much fun with our Buddies and the competition was certainly fierce!

The finalists from each class had to make their way down to the Tech Corridor where the finalists were decided.

Thank you to Mrs Ettling and Mr Murray for organising such a fun activity and to the Year Eights who were just brilliant with their Buddies.

Celebration Assembly

Just to remind you of Thursday's Celebration Assembly at 9.30am in the Drama Hall. If you are able to attend, please you could remember to sign in when you arrive at Reception. We will start to seat you from 9.15am.

Worth a Mention Children

Another week in the bag and another ten fabulous children who have made their way on to the Worth a Mention Children Board.

Huge congratulations to every single one of you on such a super achievement. 

We are extremely proud of you all.

Golden Time

14 children missed Golden Time this which is a huge improvement on last week. Well done Year Five.

I am also pleased to report a significant reduction in Detentions which is great.

See, I told you so...

Christmas Jumper Day

On the last day of term we will be holding our annual Christmas Jumper Day. Just to clarify, this is not a Non Uniform Day, we are substituting our top half for Christmas craziness and the lower half is school uniform as usual.

All donations made (we have suggested £1) will go to Save the Children.

I can't wait!

Christmas Concert

As mentioned earlier, there will be a Christmas Concert at Dorchester Middle School's Drama Hall on Wednesday 14th December at 7pm.

I know a lot of Year Five children are involved so I will be there with my trusty camera, ready to capture the magic to the best of my ability.

Christmas is definitely coming...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I think the word 'busy' doesn't really cover it! It is always hectic on the lead up to any end of term but the approach to Christmas verges on the manic doesn't it?

Without further a do, let's see what has been going on in Year Five this week...

Getting into shape

Maths is a great subject but some of the concepts can be quite tricky can't they? 

3D shapes are no exception so, in Mrs Ray and Miss Enever's Maths Group, we used a Carroll Diagram to help us think about the properties of these shapes.

We were really impressed with the children's knowledge of 3D shapes - long may it continue!

Funslingers

On Tuesday, Dorchester Middle School had a visit from Mike Bushell, BBC Sports Presenter and Diverse Sports Champion alongside a Bournemouth University Film Crew and extraneous staff.

Mr Roberts was asked to select pupils across the school so that the new sport of Funslinging, could be filmed and then rolled out as a National Disability Sport.

Our Year Five Representatives were Liam, Freddie and Isla.

They had a fantastic time trying out 'Funslinging' - from what I can see in the pictures, I think it's going to be a huge hit.

Thank you for representing our year group so positively and having a go at something that will be new for everyone.

Let them eat cake!

On Monday, 5ER had a very special delivery indeed - the most delicious cake ever made by the lovely Elliott. 

Thank you for the cake Elliott, it was scrummy!

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to this week's chosen ten.

Another cracking range of reasons to show us why you have been selected to have your name on this very prestigious board.

Lovely to see the hard work that is going on in English in particular. Well done everyone!

Golden Time

Sadly, my buoyant optimism from last week's Blog has fallen somewhat flat as 19 children missed their Golden Time this week. I am even sadder to report that 6 children missed their Golden Time as they had received a detention in the week.

However, we will put that all behind us and move forward to a new week full of hope and optimism!  

Come on Year Five, we can do it!

Celebration Assembly

A date for your diaries - Thursday 15th December.

This is the date of our next celebration assembly that will be held in the Drama Hall at 9.30am and will last for roughly an hour. 

We hope that you will be able to make it so we can all celebrate our children's successes and achievements from the Autumn Term.

Little People Christmas Decorations

 At the end of March, we are going to take the Year Five children to visit the British Museum in London as part of our Ancient Egypt topic in Humanities.

There will be a lot more information heading your way after Christmas but one of the main things is that we ask the children to do is to help fund raise so that we reduce the cost of the trip.

As part of this fundraising, the incredible Sally Boardman makes (especially for Year Five) lots of beautiful, hand-knitted Christmas Decorations.

We will start selling them next week in the Year Five Corridor (I will confirm the day in the Pupil Daily Notices) at the bargain price of £2 each. 

All proceeds go towards our British Museum Trip.

Another week under our belts and another super duper week in Year Five. Let's have a look and see what has been going on...

Let's fly away

It was lovely to see the Buddies get together this week. 

'So, what was their task this week?' I hear you cry.

Well, their mission was to make an aero-dynamic paper aeroplane ready for a competition next time to see whose can fly the furthest.

I can't wait to see who the winners are.

Whilst passing Mr Duffy's classroom, I did casually notice that there was an instructional video being played on the whiteboard  - I wonder if that could be considered to be an unfair advantage? We will see...

Worth a Mention Children

The Duffaroo!

In Science, we have been creating our own animals based on a habitat that has been researched for example, the arctic, desert, ocean etc.

I absolutely LOVED Mr Duffy's creation - The Duffaroo! To be perfectly honest, I'm a little bit scared of it but I'm sure it's a real softie!

Golden Time

I am happy to officially announce that we are 'getting there'! This week, 12 children in Year 5 missed their Golden Time which is definitely heading in the right direction.

Dare I hope for half of that number next week?

Time will tell...
