Time rolled on by...

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

What an exhausting week! Did we really have half term last week or was it a trick of the imagination? We have had a terrific week but the highlight has to be, without a doubt, our Ancient Egyptian Day on Friday.

Let's see what the children got up to along with other news and information...

Ancient Egypt Day

Seeing Ancient Egyptians in the playground before school was quite a sight to behold especially as it was one of the coldest days that we have experienced for a long time. There were a lot of shivering Ancient Egyptians, I can tell you (including me!).

Once our Egyptians had got into the warmth, we cracked on with a fabulous morning of learning, creating, making and producing!

In the afternoon we had a Fashion Parade where the children had the opportunity to show off their fabulous costumes as well as the things they had made in their workshops.

There were prizes for the best costumes in each class as well as an overall winner which was this rather awesome Mummy (!).

We had a brilliant day but it would not have been possible without the fabulous Year Five Team who made it all possible.

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to the children who found themselves on this week's Worth a Mention Board - for a couple of you this is the second week in a row!

Year 5 Tag Rugby Tournament

At Weymouth Rugby Club

Words by Mr Roberts:

If there was a combination to test our Year 5 Rugby Team - then this was it.

On paper DMS had precision,purpose and attacking intent but in reality had to show their customary defensive excellence and keen tactical instincts.

Captain Tilly refused to allow her team to surrender so our team decided to demonstrate exactly why they are feared,ruthless side stepping and composed offloading.

Great character Year 5's never yielding,always determined.

Fantastic! Well done Team Year Five!

Do we have a mad scientist in our midst?

I couldn't resist this picture! I 'caught' 5CW coming in off the playground following an experiment that involved coke and a Mentos mint. I'm intrigued! What on earth were you doing?!

Parent Consultation Evenings

As mentioned in last week's Blog, next Monday and Wednesday are the designated days for our parent Consultation Evenings that will be held in the Gym. If you would still like to book, there are a still a few available appointment times but please be aware that they may limited.

The majority of the appointments are for five minutes and it is important that we all stick to this. If you need to discuss things in further detail then please make an additional appointment with the teacher.

We will look forward to seeing you!

Are you ready?

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

I hope you all had a lovely half term and had the opportunity to recharge those very precious batteries! I don't know about you but I don't feel like I have stopped at all, there was a lot of catching up that needed to be done.

Anyway, enough of the Mrs Ray ramblings, on with the Blog...

British Museum Fundraising

We did it! Thanks to your generosity and all round loveliness we have managed to reduce the cost of the trip for each child by £4.20 which is incredible. The total we raised was £531.95 which is amazing.

The final cost of the trip is £17.80 per child so we would be very grateful for payments to be made as soon as possible. 

Ancient Egypt Day

Just to remind you that our annual Ancient Egypt Day will be held this Friday 23rd February. 

It would fabulous if as many children as possible could dress up for the day. 

The day culminates in a Fashion Parade (there will be prizes!) as well as a Show and Tell session where the children tell each other about what they did in their workshops as well as demonstrating what they have learnt.

It's a fabulous day and an excellent way to start our Ancient Egypt topic.

Parent Consultations

Our next round of Parent Consultations will be held on:

Monday 26th February 4pm - 6pm

Wednesday 28th February 5pm - 7pm

An email was sent on Friday 9th February but please don't worry if you didn't receive it or if you are unable to print out a copy of the appointment form. The children will be distributed with paper copies on Monday.

As you will appreciate, there needs to be a quick turn around so the sooner the forms come into school school the better.

We are really looking forward to meeting with you.

Celebration Assembly

Another super Celebration Assembly was held on Thursday 8th February - thank to everyone who attended.

I was so impressed with the number of stripes that were awarded during the assembly - you have all been working super hard!

Now, unfortunately, the photographs that were taken throughout the assembly were taken on my new camera and the quality was, quite frankly, pants.

I will endeavour to track down the recipients of the various stripes and take group pictures so that no one feels that they have missed out!

Sorry about that.

Worth a Mention Children

A huge gold star to Mrs Daniel and huge congratulations to this week's Worth a Mention Children.

The Feline Seal of Approval!

Well, Oscar the opinionated cat has been at it again! This time his 'victim' was young Cora. According to Mrs Daniel, he was 'helping' her mark the book reviews of The Wreck of the Zanzibar' and thought that Cora's was puuurfect (did you see what I did there?!) - look at all of that pink!

All Change!

A new half term sees a new Dorchester University module.

Mrs Schnorr and I had a super time with the children when we went to the Dorset County Museum on the Wednesday before we broke up.

I can't believe I got to hold original Alfred Wallis paintings - it was such a highlight for me!

We did try to get a sneak preview of Dippy but unfortunately everything was boarded up ready for the grand opening.

Better late than never!

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

Many apologies for the 'lateness' of this week's blog but it has been a rather busy weekend as you will see at the end of the Blog. 

We sadly said 'Cheerio' at the beginning of the week to the amazing Ms Seymour but never fear, she will be at our Celebration Assembly on Thursday.

So, without further a do, here is the latest from Year Five...

Fundraising

Oh. My. Word.

You are an incredible lot, you really are.

Our fundraising has been simply fabulous this year! I cannot begin to thank every single person who has contributed in some shape of form.

We have just 3 (yes, 3) Bookmarks to sell on Monday (1 x Minion and 2 x Elmos) and then we can total what we have raised.

I will announce it at this week's Celebration Assembly. 

Eek!

Speed Sharing

This has been an absolute joy and virtually all of the year group, with the exception of half of 5KD have had the opportunity to share their wonderful writing.

5MW were lucky enough to have Ms Pluck to share their writing with.

To say that she was impressed would be the understatement of the year!

Celebration Assembly

Don't forget that we will be hosting our next Celebration Assembly this Thursday at 2.05pm. 

If you can come, please remember to sign in before you are shown to the Drama Hall by the children.

Half Term

Even though  it has been a relatively short half term, I bet you are all looking forward to a break as we have worked you very hard this term.

You are the lucky ones who get an extra day as you break up on Thursday.

DMS vs St Mary's Puddletown

Sport is the preserve of all pupils who are willing to contend with bitterly harsh weather and formidable opposition.

DMS pupils conducted themselves with grace and humility whilst maintaining the sporting defiance that makes them so locally revered.

Our Year Five Boys were part of this terrific event.

Ancient Egypt Day

With half term fast approaching, I thought I would remind you about the Year Five Ancient Egypt Day on Friday 23rd February. 

Costumes are actively encouraged, especially as there will be prizes for the top Ancient Egyptian outfits!

Generous souls

Hello and welcome back to the Year Five Blog!

This week has been incredibly busy but incredibly rewarding! I can't begin to thank everyone who supported our second fundraising week - every event has been very well stocked and attended. I think our final fundraising total is going to impressive...

Anyway, let's see what has been going on this week...

Hot Chocolate Cafe

The wonderful smell of chocolate wafted through the Year Five corridor and enticed a lot of customers into the Room 5 Hot Chocolate Cafe.

A HUGE Thank You to Mr Duffy and Miss Enever for organising such a successful event. We're not 100% sure of the final total but we are pretty sure it is around the £80 mark.

Wow!

Crafty Mrs Lister

Mrs Lister's amazing book marks and key rings have been selling like Hot Cakes and I've already seen the bookmarks being put to good use.

Now, there are a few items left for sale. They range from £1.50 to £3.50 and every item is unique.

We will be setting up shop again on Monday so don't miss out on being a proud owner of one of these wonderful handmade crafts.

Cakes Everywhere!

Oh my! What a generous bunch you are! I couldn't believe the mountain (yes, mountain) of cakes that were donated to our Cake Sale. We had so many that we had to set up another sale the next day.

We don't know how much we have raised as yet but as soon as I do, I will let you know on this Blog!

A massive thank you to the staff and children who helped with the selling and the eating of the cakes. You are complete and utter stars!

Granny May

We have been thoroughly enjoying The Wreck of the Zanzibar by Michael Morpurgo.

This week many of the classes have been writing a diary entry as the character Granny May.

In 5MW, we hot-seated her so we could ask her lots of questions about specific events on September 9th 1907.

Our Granny May was Ben and he was excellent!

Thank you for being such a terrific Granny May!

Worth a Mention Children

I was delighted to see this week's names on the best board in the school.

What has particularly impressed me about this week's selection is the huge range of reasons chosen by the Homebase Tutors.

Well done Troy, Megan, Jadan, Mollie, Caitlyn, Zak, Blu, Merlyn, Oliver and Lauren!

Celebration Assembly

Just a quick reminder about our Celebration Assembly on the 8th February - the day we break up for half term. 

We are aiming to start at 2.05pm and are hoping to be finished by 2.25pm.
